Re: fastest thirdgens?
My third gen is the fastest car in the world.
J/K, im with 5678TA, i wanna know the fastest stick car, 5678TA i know it is not a 3rd gen but 6speedrebuilders.com has a 4th gen Z that went 8s with a 6 speed, our cars are lighter so i think we might be able to top that eh?

Re: fastest thirdgens?
Fastest manual transmission third gen? Lee Shepard had a ProStock third gen back in the 80's.
As for a manual transmission, a T5 won't survive a quick car which means it needs at least a T56 or something even stronger that probably doesn't have an OD.
The truly fast third gens will run an automatic. There are a few in the 7's on drag radials. A manual transmission is a fun factor for street driving, road course or auto crossing. It's not the transmission of choice for straight line acceleration unless class rules demand it such as in ProStock but by then, it's not a street car any more. Getting that fast you need to start running a Lenco if you want a manual transmission although a few T56's are surviving.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
I want to see what members from here, TGO, have the fastest car, I want full on street tires, not drag radials, I think that is much funner.
fastest manual would be fun to see as well. T5 or T56 i dont care.
and by fastest I mean quarter mile ET.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
With just "street tires", there may be a few but I doubt you'll find many quicker than 12's. To go fast you need to hook. It's hard if not impossible to hook with real street tires unless the track has phenomenal track prep and the tires are almost few.
I don't consider any DOT slick as a street tire. They're a DOT approved tire intended for track use only for classes that demand a DOT tire. They were never designed for real street use. The rubber compound is so soft that if they were daily driven, they would need to be replaced every 1-2 oil changes. That's not a street tire.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
Asking for full radial, man, thats asking allot. I was only making low 400 HP in my 89 witht he old motor and it was hell trying to go down the track on 295/50/15s.
As for T56 survival, they can be built for 1200 HP, and at not too bad of a price really. Thats what im doing, and they even make a flywheel to hook it up to a big block, which is in my future.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
I am very familiar with UR. That company is what inspired this thread. I know they hold records for fastest street tire/ manual transmission viper.
What do thirdgens do?
Looks like 11.40 is my goal.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
^ How did i know that was not going to be a third gen?
I think a 335 wide tire can fit under a third gen with the minor mods and right back spacing, would help with that much tire under the back, Stephen has a really good thread on the rear mods it takes to ge textra meat under the back.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
That Viper is going 9.81 at 150 mph. It's got enough HP for a very low 9 second pass or even into the 8's if it could get off the line quicker.
Here's the 7.5 second, 10.5" drag radial, third gen link. Doesn't even pull the front wheels on launch.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
Fastest is a relative term. Meaning some race in restricted rules classes while others have far less restrictions. There is radialtire who has run very fast on drag radials in his class. There are some guys running much faster in quick 8 classes which are a bit more liberal with rules. Then there's Super Stock, Stock and Comp Eliminator classes where third gen's are run where fast is measured against a set index.
I'll put my own numbers up. In J/SA I've run a best of 11.35. I changed some things around and moved up this year to H/SA and best so far is 11.06. I was hoping to move up to G/SA but right now I can't get enough weight out.

Everyday street tires? That's still leaving the door wide open. You're asking a question that will never get a straight answer. A fast car is all about traction. Street tires just won't give the proper traction to a fast car. Typically if you can get into the 11's on "everyday street tires" with any car, you're doing good. Many struggle to get into the 12's for lack of traction and need better tires.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
Im just asking a generic question for a personal goal I want to set.
Don't need to get particular, i dont care whats done to the car. it can be full blown race car, whatever.
no need to get technical.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
my friends run PSCA pacific street car assosiation in the wild street class. they have to run the 275-60-15 et street radial. last weekend kevin with a 86 iroc ran 8.22 @ 173 . and his brother jeff with a 85 camaro ran 8.85 but has run 8.53 @ 163. both are small blocks with f-2 pro chargers. both have current registration and ins. i have tried to get them on this site , but they are hardly ever on a computer.

Re: fastest thirdgens?
A lot slower. hooking up with that much power on street tires is a complete and total joke. i would think they'd slip back close to 10s because they'd never be able to get totally into it, and be fighting for traction the whole way down the track
