Both Camaros at the track this weekend

Friday just the green LS1/4L60E Camaro. First TT, 0.000 RT - sweet. 2nd TT, 0.005 RT - Hmmm, maybe we're on to something here. Wish it would have carried throughout the night, but alas, it didn't. Went out 2nd round in 2 classes.

Left the car there overnight and got a ride home with my son. Saturday morning drove the silver LS1/T56 car to the track. Ran the green car in two classes. First time out this year with the silver car in the "stick shift" class. In the green car I had a couple more .00x RTs. Silver car, 1st hit: -0.004 - okay, we can fix that. 2nd shot, +0.007. Okay, we're loaded for bear.

First round, first class in the green car, I'm paired with a 17-second Colbalt, non-registered racer. We won't get into the RTs, but suffice it to say she got to the line first by 0.04 sec and my MOV was over .2 seconds.

Then we got rained out...

Kind of sweet to have both cars sitting in the pits with the hoods open and see people's reactions to what are under there.

Re: Both Camaros at the track this weekend

At least you got to make some passes. Our weekend was completely shot. Both days, racing was canceled because of high winds. We had 30 mph head winds gusting to 50. On Sunday, by 11 AM, the temperature was still hovering around 8c.

At least I got to run my car up and down the return road to check some stuff out.

Nice lights. I hope I can get some of those this year.

Re: Both Camaros at the track this weekend

it's so cool when you have more than one car there. i don't have multiple cars to run, but i have several guys that i've done work on there cars. it's always cool to see 4 or 5 thirdgens all parked in a row with a Walter Racecraft sticker on the back of each

There are getting to be more 3rd gens at the track regularly these days. There's an '82 in Super Pro that runs high-10's, a couple in the High School class (stock & pretty slow), and some that I see occasionally.

I can't complain too much. I'm in 2nd place in one class (won first race night), and am tied with 6 other racers in another class (rain shortened first race). I'm within shouting distance in all the classes I'm running in.

Same scenario this past Saturday - with both Camaros at the track, anyway.

Can't say the same for my RT's in the LS1/4L60E car. I put new tires on it earlier this month (I switch the rears to DOT slicks at the track, run the highway fronts as they are), can't seem to get the RT formula back. Well, at least consistently. I did have a .002 RT my final time trial Saturday, but the one before that was .120. With RT's all over the place, it was 1st and 2nd round exits in the two classes I run both Friday night and Saturday - two classes each day, out first round in one, out 2nd round in the other. I did have a .007 RT and .018 package my 2nd eliminations pass on Saturday, but the other guy red lit - what a waste.

For the LS1/T56 stick car on Saturday, a slightly different story. Had acceptable RT's during the two TT's given (.005 and .056), and ET was reasonably consistent - 13.440 @ 8300' DA first pass, 13.498 @ 8800' DA second pass. Wish the auto car was that dependable. And that was granny-rowing it.

The Stick Shift class is laddered first round based on TT ET's, sportsman ladder. 28 cars, I'm 17th, meaning I'm paired with #3, a 9.8-sec '68 Camaro - who also happened to be the only class season champion for the first 5 years of the class' existence. He has also been known to pick on the tranny brake cars with success. First round I dial 13.48 even though DA is now 9000', just because I didn't think I could judge the strip with 35+ MPH delta (and there was a slight head breeze 2nd TT, dead calm 1st round). We both get green lights, I'm way ahead of him most of the track (of course), he blasts by me at the stripe, slight delay after I cross, then my win light came on. Double break out, he 9.734 on a 9.83 dial, me 13.459, with me taking the stripe by .025. My .036 to his .116 RT was the main difference, although I'd like to be able to say I knew I was taking .02 stripe...

2nd round I'm paired with a 11.5-sec Stang, whom I didn't know. I dialed down to 13.45, then proceeded to go -.011 on the tree. Then it ran a 13.48 (DA went from 9000 to 9200 while I was in the staging lanes). Oh, well. Oh, he had an .040 light knowing he had the win, broke out by .05, then had a .5xx light next round...

Didn't feel too bad about an average .027 RT leaving off the clutch (using absolute values for the average calculation ), and less than .06 ET difference in 4 runs with DA changing 900' over the day while rowing through the gears.

Forgot to mention, changed the 26x9.50-14 Hoosier DOTs mounted tubeless that I ran back in May to 26x10.00-15 MT ET Drags with tubes on the stick car this weekend. Changed launch RPMs from 4200, which absolutely blew off the Hoosiers, to 5500, which barely chirped the MT's. 60' went from best of 1.95 with the DOT's and open exhaust (DA 6000' that day), to 1.86 with the ET Drags and full Force II exhaust (at 9000' DA).

(Side Note: In 8 rounds of eliminations over the weekend, running in 5 different classes, 2 of which are aimed at "street cars", I left last - exactly once. Me running 13-sec street cars {which would be mid-12 second cars at sea level}. Needless to say, I'm much more used to being the tortoise than being the hare.)

(Side Note #2: I think I had at least one person ask me when I was going to have the '57 back out again for every run I made this weekend. That would be about 18 times. Given my recent performances in the Camaros {my highest placing right now is 6th in points - it just gets ugly in the other classes}, I can't imagine why they'd want to see me back in the staging lanes with the '57...)

Believe me, that thought has crossed my mind many a time.

I just may drive it out there one of these times instead of flying for an upcoming business trip...

My wife got some video of last Friday's racing. It was warm during my time trial runs (85 degrees, DA 9000'+), then as the final cars were doing their time trials a rainstorm came through which cooled the air and raised the humidity - DA around 8400', but humidity seems to throw off the car more than the DA would indicate. For the first round of the first class, I took a guess at a dial-in, but had a horrible light, so lost that one ugly. First round of the 2nd class went a little better (sorry about the focus problems - the camera was having trouble in the low light).

That's a '62 Impala with a stroked dual quad 409. He dials in .05 increments (which is better than what he used to do, dial in .10 increments). Why he took so much stripe I don't know, but it worked out to my advantage.

2nd round, I got tree'd, but same thing - he blew by me then stayed in it (unusual for him - he's a 9-time track season champ).

She didn't get the 3rd round - I actually took the stripe on that one without breaking out. 4th round I got lazy on the tree again, other guy couldn't run the number, I took .0098 stripe and broke out by .007. That was the last round, as we ran up against curfew. Missed the money by .0028 sec...

Re: Both Camaros at the track this weekend

Since I'm gearing up for an LS1 swap, I need to stop by the track and check out your car, and pick your brain. I live in Golden, so I think I can make the effort to head to the track...
