how hard is it to actually install a turbo????

well? if i want to go to the junkyard and pick up a volvo turbo would all would be needed to get it boosting my 305? could i just run a tube from the turbo to my intake and then one from the turbo into a modified exhaust manifold??? im not talking any huge turbo just somehting small that would spool up quick and add a decent amount of power to my tpi....

a single volvo turbo would be much too small for even a 305.

And to continue, even if the installation of the turbo was simple, you still need fuel upgrades, possible computer upgrades, etc etc.

I'm gathering parts for mine as we speak....might even be able to start fabrication on parts of it this week.

well i knew it would be small but i figured it would still give a small amount of boost and hp increase. being so small no real fuel, computer, or other mods would be necessary. just a cheap backyard project i thought might be within reach, im building a 383 soon anyway just curious to see if i could throw something up until then......if i could then i could make some cash off the 305!!!

the turbo would make boost just fine. actually you would certainly have some serious overboost problems putting all that exhaust through a tiny wastegate. The main limiting problem would be the airflow through the compressor. You would probably max it out around 2500 rpm and the car would fall flat on its face.

For some good info, check out the JYTT guys on yahoo or the guys onturbomustangs.com

The turbo isn't boosting "just fine" if it falls on its face around 2500.

You just told him that it would be ok, but then that it wouldn't work...

well i thought it would be a fun little project........and if the turbo stops working at 2500 RPM wouldnt the engine power take over after that?

unfortunately no. The turbo running out of steam means it will just be a restriction for the engine. You'll be slower

Bottom line: get two

Two of the .42/.48 saab turbos should be *ok* on your 305, but still a bit small. Your best bet would be to get a couple .60/.63 AR turbos from an 80s mustang SVO or 84-85 thunderbird turbocoupe. This is what im doing with a 350, and they are bordering on the small side, so they should preform quite well on a 305.

You will, however, need more if you are stepping up displacement to 383. In that case, to keep it in the "junkyard" fashion, you can use the t-3's from a grand national. ("junkyard" in quotes because you will never find a GN in a junkyard) Those turbos have the same turbine, but a larger compressor wheel that has been compared to a TO4B, i believe.

I am buying a turbo laser tomorrow. In a few weeks I plan on upgrading to a evo16g or 18g turbo.

I don't know if the volvo turbo is any bigger than a 14b mitsu turbo but if not I will have a good 14b up for sale.
