I've heard using nitro with an automatic transmission isn't the greatest idea in the world. Is there any truth to that? I've seen quite a few cars with automatics using nitrous...

If you go to the Dragstrip and take a look around you will see that the majority of the cars there will have auto trannies. If you look at the "race only" cars almost all of them will. The bad news is that th700r4s aren't excactly the strongest trannies (in stock form) out there.

Actually I'm replacing my dying 700R4 with a TCI Street Fighter TH400. Are Turbo 400s strong trannies?

As long as your trans is built decent, an automatic is best for nitrous.
Why? Because if you miss a shift with a manual, you could overrev and nuke a motor very easily, hard to do with an auto set to shift at the right RPM. I know that in a fast car like 12.0 or faster, you can hit 3rd gear with a T5 in about 4 seconds, needing 2 shifts, wanna chance that? I wouldn't.
As for durability, a friend has a '89 350 IROC with a 100hp nitrous kit. The trans is slipping pretty good now, even with a big trans cooler in front of good airflow. He needs to have the trans done now (obviously), it ran 13.0 at 105mph on drag radials.
See my signature to see my Camaro's times, and yes it is an auto (Level 10).

The ignorant person gets something today and hopes to have enough money to pay for it tomorrow.

TH400 are pretty stout. You should have no problems.

actually, using a maual trans with nitro is a bad idea. ive got 208 runs at the track on my 700r4..and it still works good..11.8 is the best ive done on nitro..most of the 208 runs were in the 12s and a few low 13s.ive got a friend with the same car but he has a 408 with a blower and 400tr trans and hes runin 10.0s..he did have the 700r4 in there but it only lasted a week runing those times.

I had my trans done in 1994, god knows how long a turn-around time it takes now.
A really built TH700R4 will get a decent car into the low 10's to high 9's before it breaks. Faster than that, you can either go TH400 (No OD, so it sux), or the the TH400 with the OD (the one in the big trucks from GM), you will have a hard time breaking one of those.
