single turbo setup being built, couple of questions
hi, im currently in the middle of building my first turbo setup....
89 formula, using ebayT70
, have the headers, and have the pipes to the merge collector which are 2.5", one of my questions is should the size after the collector be 3" or stay at 2.5" to keep up velocity?
also what size should the cold side plumbing be? i would guess 3"???
another thing is i was considering a water to air intercooler because of the lack of air flow in my front bumper area.(dont really wanna cut the bumper all up)
could anyone inform me on the necessary items for the W2A intercooler like water lines, resevior, is there a pump involved?
down pipe is 3"for about 16-18" then opens to 3.5",
probably not going to use any muffler...does this sound sufficient for this level of build?
thanks in advance, Keith

Re: single turbo setup being built, couple of questions
Hey, good luck with the build. 2.5" is fine for after the collectors, i'd leave it at that. Most people run 2.5" or 3" for the cold side. I made my choice based off the turbo & intercooler inlet/outets, both were 2.5" for me. How much boost are you planning to run and what is you power goal? The downpipe should be ok as long as it's mandrel bent all the way back, but it might become a restriction if you're looking to get big power numbers. What does the rest of your system consist of? engine, fuel, etc...

Re: single turbo setup being built, couple of questions
right now i am mocking it up/fabbing it around a TPI 305, i probably wont even run it on the motor at all.
I am trying to decide on the motor, it will be a 350, probably not stroked, just a 355, but i have a "010" 4-bolt main block w/ a standard bore, but i also have a 1-piece rear main seal, roller cam, 2-bolt main block...that i would like to have splayed 4-bolt main caps put onto..... BUTT the block is already bored .030 over and not crazy about starting an engine build with more overbore than that.
either way it'll be TPI, i have a 58mm holley TB, hyd roller cam, was thinking of one of the XFI cams- 113LSA...
i would like to try Megasquirt i think, but may spend the extra money and get a holley commander or FAST setup.
8.5-8.75:1compression ratio,
would like to make around 500RWHP,
im guessing i'd run anywheres between 12 and 18PSI...
i am definitely willing to swap a more efficient, better suited turbo in place of the 62mm in order to reach this goal.
fuel system is all aeromotive, new in boxes, A1000 pump, aeromotive filter, aeromotive 5 port boost referenced regulator, -10AN feed and return...
my fuel system was originally bought for a blow through carb setup, i was told that the regulator might not work for EFI, i believe the part number is 13202.
I dont have injectors yet. have to look more into sizing, possibly 44, or 50lb/hr...
what are the cheapest injectors available and where to buy them?
my down pipe isnt 100% done yet, i am waiting on a v-band clamp and another 45* bend, but it is mostly there, tacked together, and it is going to dump around the trans. crossmember, with no muffler(unless its wayyy to loud, i'll run a bullet or something)
calebzman, how much HP / FT/LBs do you make with your setup?
any 1/4 mile times?

Looks like you have a good idea of what you have to do. I started off with just the open exhaust, but it was too loud for me. I added a magnaflow straight-thru muffler and I'm really happy with the sound now. In a couple weeks I'm taking mine to a dyno to get it tuned, so I'll be able to find out how much power it's putting out pretty soon.

The water to air setup depends on how long you need it to cool for. How big the tank is, etc. It is going to be loud without a muffler.

Re: single turbo setup being built, couple of questions
I'm just curious about "turbo'ing" a TPI .... If the stock system runs out of breath naturally aspirated how do they do when you force even more air through them?

I cant really tell you how or why it works so well with forced induction, it just does...

low 9's @ 150mph, somethings workin.
theres quite a few other successful Turbo TPI builds out there too.

Re: single turbo setup being built, couple of questions
seems like all the questions have been answered accept the IC. SO here ya go:
Parts needed:
A2W IC
water/ice res. ( i recommend 5-7 gallons for street)
water pump (meziere or stock one off lightning or cobra)
lines/fittings
heat exchanger, (afco or a stock one off a lightning or cobra)
also whats the PN on the regulator you have?

Thanks for the W2A IC info,
the wheel is only 60.5mm, and T3 Flange, Better suited for a Syclone or something...
