Previous time viewing problem.

Before, whenever you would come to the site, the threads from last time you were here were not highlighted, and only new ones were.

Now, everything is highlighted, untill you click it.

Anyone else have this problem?? Its happened to me on 3 different pc's, so I feel its not my end.

Jason made a change in the behavior of how the system keeps track of read thread/posts. Prior, it was cookie based with a 15 minute inactivity limit. Meaning, after 15 minutes of inactivity, you were labeled as inactive and all new posts/threads were set as read from the last time of your activity.

With the new behavior, all posts/threads are marked as unread until you actually read it, 7 days pass, or you use the Mark All Forums Read or Mark Forum read links.

This change was done because there has been some issues with the email notification links not taking the user to the newest post, and it was offered as a possible "resolution".

However, I'm not sure if this will remain, or revert back, as it appears to impact mysql and the server load, and may not even really fix the issue. It's up to Jason. I think it is still being "tested".

Ok, thanks. This just seems kinda weird as I've never been on a board that acts like this. Guess I need to find that "mark all boards as read" button.

It is located on the main index forum page (https://www.thirdgen.org/forums), near the bottom of the page, towards the center. Underneath the birthday list.

I changed it back for now. It wasn't having the intended result and that side-effect was annoying.

OK I have two things, this thread answered 1 of them, the 15min thing.

1. Can we extend that to 30mins? If your gone for a couple of days it can take over 15mins just to read a thread sometimes and then your timed out and have no idea what you have and haven't read.

2. For some reason the site is no longer displaying properly on my work computer, my home one is fine. At work its missing all the pictures I just get the red x where they should be, this includes the icons next to each thread and all the sponser links and reply, quote ect ect buttons. I know this is going to be a setting on this stupid work computer but any ideas which one. It use to be fine, then one morning it no longer worked. This is the only site it happens on to.

Sounds like a firewall blocking port 8080. The images you speak of are served from port 8080, instead of the normal port 80.

As JT already mentioned, your inability to see images is because someone at your organization is blocking port 8080. We serve images from that port with lighttpd to take load off of Apache.

As to the 15 minute timeout, that is an inactivity timeout. Any time you do anything, the timer restarts, that includes clicking to the next page of a thread, viewing an attachment, etc. I would really rather not extend it as extending the cookie timeout has other side effects.

What ever the changes the forum is now un-viewable in opera again. Had this problem during the first changes and then ya got it all fixed. Now its doin it again but different.

And no its not opera, its changes you made here. Don't care what version you got it working on. Forum worked fine 3-4 days ago[ and for months just fine]. Now all ofa sudden its unreadable.

I know ya might not care if i can see things but..........
Who knows how many new folks wont bother with asking why it doesn't view right and move on to a forum that does.

Its like the top bar grafix have spread all over. Probably just a tiny simple code error that doesn't effect all browser versions.

I'm using Opera right now and it looks perfect. There was an error in the layout that was causing the vBulletin copyright to appear on the right side of the screen when viewed in Opera, but I had Dave fix that yesterday.

You're using Opera 9. There is something about this site that Opera 9 does not like (earlier versions work just fine). I'll have Dave loko into it. In any case, use a different browser until he figures it out.

I cannot remember, was this the same issue that there previously was, or was the previous case all white instead of all red?

The previous issue, was it with the same Opera version? I don't use Opera myself so I don't really know these answers.

I had fixed the issue the last time, so I might be able to help with this once again.

Opera is dumb and why it doesn't work as nicely as Firefox and IE is frustrating.

It's not smart enough to realize when a new div tag begins it should forget about (close) the previous div tag, due to all the plugins and mods with vB closed tags are hard to track. This was the issue and should be corrected

Hey you fixed it.

I wouldn't fix anytihng just for me but its sure to help others...........

Only browser I really like is netscape 4.78 but I only use it for mail and composer. Though it has some awful neat tricks that can bypass stuff.
The right click and open a page in composer will bypass any fancy tricks and give you the page in raw code,
