No Sound from Bose Gold System
Hi, I'm the original owner of a 1990 IROCZ that has been stored since 1992 and has 7400 miles on the clock. Unfortunately, though I plan to pass it on to my son someday, I have a strong suspicion that when he was little he got in the car and cranked the stereo up as loud as possible--blowing something out. I don't know where to look or what to look for, but I get no sound other than slight static out of the speakers. Some have said that if one speaker blows, they all go dead, but I've not been able to confirm this. I hesitate to take it somewhere and would prefer to fix it myself, if possible. Any help that you could be offered would be greatly appreciated.

Re: No Sound from Bose Gold System
Welcome aboard. I'd see if I could borrow a cheap speaker from a buddy. Maybe something lying around from another project. Confirm that you either have bad speakers or a bad stereo. That being said, I've heard blown speakers that at low volume still sound pretty decent. Don't know that I've ever heard of four failing so completely that there is no audible sound other than static. Maybe try a tape or CD as well as the AM/FM.

I tried to upload a pic, but it's not showing. I did put two in an album though.

Re: No Sound from Bose Gold System
Follow that diagram and check the ARC fuse, the ACC fuse and the Radio fuse. It seems like it could be power loss to all the AMPS or possibly a loss of power to the radio itself. If all 3 of those fuses are good,... my next check would be to pull off a kick panel and probe the orange wire for power when the radio is turned ON. If no there's no power at the range wire when the radio is turned on then the BOSE RELAY might have failed.

Re: No Sound from Bose Gold System
Thanks much. I'll let you know if I find the problem. As said, I'm the original owner and bought the car when I was in my thirties; so I'm older now and don't spend as much time in my garage as I once did. But before I pass the car on, I hope to get some enjoyment from it--albeit without putting too many miles on it.

Re: No Sound from Bose Gold System
Just a quick update,... After writing that post above last night I worked on a BOSE head unit at my bench for awhile. It performed just about the same as your radio,... Seemed like only static till the volume was turned to the MAX and then (very) slight sound could be heard. All parts of the testing set-up are know to be OK, ( Power, Ground, all AMPS and speakers test OK with a know good head-unit ) so the 'no sound' from all channels you reported could very well be the result of a dead head-unit.

I had the same static coming from the Bose speakers when I bought my car. No sound except when I turned it up to max and even then you could hardly hear what was playing. Turned out to be bad capacitors in each of the four speaker amps.

Re: No Sound from Bose Gold System
Thanks for all the suggestions/help. I hope to get the chance (motivation?) to do some troubleshooting soon. Though I live in California, at my age, I'm not as excited about working in my garage as I once was. But, I'm very grateful for everyone's help and confident that I'll eventually figure this out.

Re: No Sound from Bose Gold System
The simplest way ( IMO ) to proceed is to evaluate the entire system as is ( everything plugged in properly ) and test the system and make a note of anything relevant. Once you have your "baseline",....
Disconnect BOTH front kick panels,
Swap them from Left to Right and plug them in ( temp install, let them lay on the floor.),
Turn on the system and make note ANY changes.
If all the details remain the same ( sound from L but none from R for example ) then the head unit is suspect.
If some of the details change ( was no should L and sound on R,... now there IS sound on L and NO sound on R ) then the AMP / speaker is suspect.
Repeat with rear speakers to evaluate the rear speaker channels.
** Rear Speakers / AMPs are probably just a little stuck in place,... they should 'pop' out with a little help/persuasion if still factory installed. ( If someone glued them in place - all bets are off ! )
FYI: I can rebuild the originals amps,... and I can also offer replacement BOSE AMPs too. Send me a PM if you need details.
