SLP headers - EO number - smog test
Has anyone failed smog in the past year or so due to not having an EO number stamped into their SLP (or other brand) smog legal headers? Apparently this is a change in law in the past year or so.
Any ideas for how to get around it? I'm not sure what will fly with the average smog tech...

Re: SLP headers - EO number - smog test
Happened to me 5yrs ago w/ edelbrock headers.Tried 3 different smog stations, no way around it (for me anyway).Ended up sourcing a used later set that had the number stamped on the header & problem solved. Also went thru this w/ my s10 the next yr too.I just went back to manifolds on that one.

Re: SLP headers - EO number - smog test
I had a similar thing happen to me the last time I went to smog. I think the shop was just trying to shine me off. They don't want to do OBD1 cars anymore because its a longer test and more involved than just plugging in the ALDL connector and letting the computer do all the work.
You have to find a mod-friendly smog test shop. Good luck.

Re: SLP headers - EO number - smog test
Didn't SLP have a welded on tag on later production headers?

Re: SLP headers - EO number - smog test
Mine has one, but it just has SLP stamped into it - nothing further.
I'm considering going to a laser engraver to get a professionally done engraving of the EO number and part number, but there isn't much extra space on the tag. I could fabricate a whole new tag, but then it will never match the coating/finish on the headers, and it might look "faked". Otherwise, added cost to strip and re-finish the headers.
I've played along with a lot of CA smog laws and saw that they made some sense, but this one really irks me. I paid good money to comply with smog legality with these SLP headers, and the state knows full well that they didn't require stampings in the headers before; so there is decades worth of headers out there that are not marked but are in fact smog legal headers. I don't understand how this hasn't affected every make and model across the board from honda to ford to our GM stuff...

Re: SLP headers - EO number - smog test
This may be a dumb question but I have a pair of Dyno Don's headers and I can't remember if they have a stamp but they are smog legal. Do I need to do any work to Dyno Don's Headers?

Re: SLP headers - EO number - smog test
This is an interesting development. I have Borlas on what I call my "third.gen"; it's my '89 Chev K1500 EC. I've had these headers on my truck for over twenty years with no tag. I have a smog shop that I've been going to for the last fifteen years at least that is familiar with my vehicle and they haven't made it an issue. I had a bit of trouble with my '98 Firebird when I swapped an LS6 into it and I finally got my ECM reprogrammed so I didn't get the intermit codes that had failed me on a test two years ago. I may have to e-mail Borla just in case...

Re: SLP headers - EO number - smog test
Old thread I know, but I’m having this same problem here in SoCal. I have a set of one of the unmarked SLP headers and the smog shops are giving me issues even with the original sticker and a receipt for the headers from ‘99. Anyone got any recommendations on what to do?

SLP headers - EO number - smog test
I went through this with my '89 Z28. No stamp on SLP headers 1 3/4" with dual cats - Part# 30003. EO D-187-10. Smog dude referenced a binder with listing of EO's by device. If I remember right, sometimes EO's expire or there are revisions. Call SLP, pay nominal fee for them to mail a new EO decal. Stick it on the car. Arriving with decal in your hand won't work. Similar experience but, with Gibson exhaust. Expired EO number. Drove out to Gibson for new EO. Replaced old decal. Passed.

Re: SLP headers - EO number - smog test
But you can still buy C.A.R.B approved headers with an adhesive EO label. You just can't use em and pass the smog test, the irony!
The only solution carb was able to give...swap back to stock manifolds. Which I ended up doing. Both on my 84 and my 99 s10.
