coil spring compressors

Can anyone recommend any coil spring compressors that work well on the front springs on third gens. It must be the ones that go inside the spring through the hole in the track control arm (obviously!).

Thanks.
Andy.

Check out ebmillers site for another idea and a fairly
complete disassembly guide
"5inch pipe" looks good

I agree, that is a great idea! What are the metal plate dimensions? I am going to the hardware store tomorrow!

Thanks for the plug, urbman.

Here's a pic and a link to my page:

Rented from AutoZone, $35 I think, and all refunded. Read the description, you'll need the pipe nipple to make it go smooth.

I purchased the spring compressor from a local
tool store...
Santa Fe Tool, ( I can give you the phone number or address
if that would be useful, excellent selection of speciality tools )
They are usually available from larger auto parts stores..

The dimensions are roughly ... 4x4x1/4 inches
"eb's" idea would let you skip shortening the threaded rod...

I just did my front suspension last weekend. I replaced motor mounts, tranny mount, control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rods, idler arm, tie rod connectors with Hotchkis, centerlink, Eibach springs, KYB Struts, got new alignment. It was easier to compress the coil springs ebmiller way since springs slip right out of the control arm. Need no spring compressor to install springs. Ball joint boot was not installed at shop. They said too many complaints if they get torn. So check with your shop. Paid $75 to remove spindles, ball joint and bushings and have new bushings and ball joint installed. Used 1 1/2 inch diameter copper pipe to install the ball joint boots, they are an interference fit. Otherwise, everything was pretty easy. Sorry, but never used the Urbman set up. If you are planning this upgrade, review the ebmiller websites they helped the most.
