Old post... but bringing it back up.
Just curious as to why all the other bigger companies are using mild steel and chromoly type metals instead of billet alum?
BMR, Spohn, and most others I see are all made from steel or something of equal str.
Is the billet alum not safe when used for control arms? Panhard bars and such?

The general rule of thumb is that 6061 T6 aluminum is 1/3 the strength of mild steel. If you could get these parts made from 7075 T6 aluminum, it has the same strength as mild steel, but cost 10 times as much.
I just made a a panhard bar for my car. I made the end inserts on my cnc turning center out of mild, and used mild tubing for the bar and had it tig welded. I'm not willing to take the chance using aluminum on these parts to save a few pounds of weight. Owning a machine shop and seeing how parts fail, this just isn't worth in in my opinion.

That's the same thing I was thinking. I don't really trust the fact that these items are so much weaker. I guess I'll stick with Spohn stuff, it isn't much more expensive, and I know it's good stuff.
