Wolfe 5 Point Rollbar?

I went to a GMHTP shootout this weekend and the majority of the 4th gens had 6 point Wolfe Rollbars in them. They looked good and I climbed in and out of a Z28 with one all weekend and didn't mind it.

I was going to have a custom bar made for my TTA but it always takes forever for custom work. I checked www.wolferacecraft.com but it doesnt say for a 3rd gen and the pics are all 4th gens.

I did a search and found something about making sure the interior door handles on 3rd gens still work.

I am looking for a 5 point bar that will be NHRA/IHRA Legal, I like how the Wolfe bends down so its not a pain to get in and out of the car.

Anyone have one or something similar?

Also reading that Welding the bar in place is not legal, you need to use plates and bolt through the floor because its a subframe car.

Wolffe racecraft does does very pretty work with their rool cages. But they are pricey. You can order a 4 or a 6 point cage from Jegs for about $150. I believe you can add an extra $40 per side for the bars that sweep underneathe the door handles for clearance.

If you just drop off the bars and the car with someone, installation will be very expensive. I recommend pulling out all your seats, pulling your carpet, etc. Basically do all the prep work you possibly can. An then install and cut your own new carpet.

as far as I know, the jegs cages are race legal, but I'm not sure about which race applications.

I called and they do not make a bar for a thirdgen, I don't mind paying for a nice bar. I already have everything out of the car except dash and door panels.

Was hoping there would be a nice bolt in 5 point legal cage like Wolfe has for the 4th gens but I guess not.

Off to the fabricater I go

I'm browsing the JEGS catalogue now.

You can have as stated in the last post a 4-point for $122.99 or an 8-point for $149.99. They also have 10 and 12 point.

You can bolt them in if you want by purchasing the add-on bolt-in kit for $55 (although its probably better to weld them in).

They are custom fit and the 8,10,& 12 exceed NHRA and IHRA standards, as per the catalogue.

You can have what you want for much cheaper than wolfe racecraft would produce for you. But it will require a little more leg work.

Try here and they do have a option of bending the bar outta the way for the arm rest.

Thanks guys, there is no reason to put in an 8 or 10 point cage. The extra weight that adds is stupid. I want to build what is legal which is a 5 point bar.

I'll let you know how it works out.

Straight from the NHRA website.

When do I need a roll bar or roll cage, and what should it look like?
A roll bar is required in any convertible running 13.99 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and in other cars beginning at 11.99. The roll bar is accepted in vehicles running as quick as 10.00 second e.t., provided the stock firewall and floorboard is intact, other than for installation of wheel tubs. The rollbar must be constructed of minimum 1 ¾ inch o.d. x .118 inch wall mild steel tubing, or 1 ¾ x .083 chrome moly tubing, and must conform to the following diagram:

Here is another quote from Hotrod mag.

"An NHRA-legal rollbar is also required in the category. Recent rule changes have reconfigured what NHRA classifies as a rollbar. The classic four-point bar is no longer acceptable. The new standard is mild-steel tubing of at least .120-inch wall thickness (most chassis companies, like Art Morrison, use .134-inch wall tubing) that includes a forward-running side bar from the main hoop past the driver’s shoulder. This bar is only required on the driver’s side, but most systems include both sides for a six-point rollbar. "

I'm not sure what to tell you. You want a 5 point cage. I've done some internet searching in the past on rollcages and have not seen anything that are specifically 5-point for 3rd gens. So get a custom 6 point with your desired tubing thickness (and the Jegs cages do come with the plates you referred to) and just leave the passenger side bar off.

Whatever dood. I'd rather have the 6 point cage than bend the s<x>hit outta the chassis cause you only put a 5 point bar in there..

Its kind of unclear. If you read the image it says a car without a frame must have two plates bolted or the top plate welded to the rocker????

Kind of iffy and unclear...

If you bolt it in you must use a top and bottom plate. If you weld it in you only need a top plate.

i know this is a old post, but i was doing a search on rollbars in verts, and this came up, so i thought id clarify for anyone else doing a search on the subject.. most of the other threads dont talk about strip legal rollbars... just looks and fitment.

if you're welding them in... you weld the top plate down... then the bar to the top plate... this spreads the force over the area of the plate on the sheetmetal (otherwise the tube would just punch thru)

if you're bolting it in, you cant just bolt to the sheetmetal, the bolts would pull out...

so you have the bolts go thru the top plate, thru the floor and thru a bottom plate.... that "sandwiches" the floor between the two plates...
