Disc Brake Conversion

1992 CAMARO RS CONVERTIBLE
305 TBI

I AM SURE THAT THIS HAS BEEN ASKED MORE THAN ENOUGH TIMES ON THIS BOARD, I DID SEARCH AND DID NOT FIND ALL THE DETAILS THAT I WANTED.

SO HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS, AS MUCH DETAIL AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD WOULD BE APPRECIATED AND "THANK YOU!!" IN ADVANCE FOR THOSE NICE ENOUGH TO REPLY AND SHARE THEIR EXPERTISE!

1) CAN THE DRUM BRAKES BE REPLACED WITH FACTORY OR AFTER MARKET DISC BRAKES WHILE KEEPING THE ORIGINAL REAR END IN THE CAR, WITHOUT GETTING INTO SOME HUGE FABRICATION MESS?

2) IS IT JUST EASIER TO FIND A THIRD GEN DONOR CAR WITH DISC REAR BRAKES AND TAKE THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY TO INSTALL IN MY CAR? WHAT OTHER COMPONENTS WOULD I TAKE FROM THE DONOR CAR TO MAKE THE JOB COMPLETE? ARE 3RD GEN CARS WITH REAR DISCS COMMON?

3) IF REPLACING THE REAR END, DOES THE COMPUTER KNOW OR CARE IF THE REAR GEAR RATIO IS DIFFERENT? DOES IT MATTER?

4) IS THERE ANOTHER GM VEHICLE THAT IS INTERCHANGEABLE WITH THE REAR END, BESIDES FIREBIRD/TA OF COURSE!

5) IN 3RD GENS, IS THERE SUCH THING AS A "POSI" REAR END?

6) IS THE SWAP WORTH THE TIME AND EXPENSE?

THANKS,

STEVE

EASY ON THE CAPS LOCK MAN!!!!

Question #1: Yes. Take a look at this thread I just replied to. The '89-97 PBR setups are a good swap to look into for the simplest swap, IMO:

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=222546

#2: Yes it's easier to just swap the whole rearend but 3rg gen disc rears with the good brakes are HARD to come by, the 4th gen rears are not. Plus, with a whole new rear, you can pick a different gear ratio if you'd like.

#3: If the gear ratio is different, you will need to change out the speedo gear in the tranny tail to make the speedo read correctly in the car.

#4: Whole rearends, not really unless you're handy with a welder to make the mounting points...not worth the hassle IMO.

#5: Posis- yes, there's plenty of them, and you can install one if you'd like to.

#6: What's it worth to you? If you want better gear ratios and better brakes, swap rears.

If you have any questions on the brake stuff, send me a PM or e-mail, I can point you in a few directions.

89 - 97 PBR??

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the reply.

What exactly is a 89 - 97 pbr setup?

Are you saying a rear end out of a 4th gen is a viable swap?

Thanks,

Steve

The '89-97 PBR brakes are the better rear discs to have, as seen in this pic from my car. Yes a 4th gen rear will work just fine. If you ever plan on running 4th gen wheels, get a 4th gen rear and pick which ratio you want to have.

To answer your other question, the computer doesn't react any differently to having another gear ratio in the rearend. I went from 2.73 to 3.42 on my tbi car and it really woke it up!

thanx

#1: Yes it's a direct bolt in except for the e-brake cables. '93-97s won't give you any problems but the '98-up rears with the LS1 brakes will. DynoDon posted a nice pic of the bracket he made to get the LS1 rear's cables to work and I suggest you follow his design;

#2: The speedo gears. These 2 gears (drive and driven) in the tranny tail section must match the rearend ratio for the speedo to read right. Not a hard swap but not like changing a shock either. Read more about it at www.700r4.com;

#3: Probably a 2.73 10 bolt, open rear. That's what mine is.

I heard the newer Blazers and Bravada's rear disc's/calipers will work with our cars. I am not sure about the truth behind this. If it is true that would give some more interchangability right?

They're the same design as the LS1s only a bit smaller. They'll work though, install would be just like the LS1 brake install in the Tech Articles.

What if I am swapping the front discs to a Baer brake kit, does baer make a rear disc conversion kit with their brake setup? Cause if i am swapping out the fronts with baer's, and I have to swap out the back drums with discs...might as well go with the same ones I would have up front.

Without. My RS has an open 2.73 rear stock. My 2.77 9 bolt posi is going in it soon.

91Bird, Baer has a rear kit for $785 at Thunder Racing.

Have you looked into the C4, C5, or LS1 front brake swaps yet? Much more budget minded than Baer with the same if not better performance. LS1s have a 12"x 1.25" thick rotor...it's HUGE!

ed, how much do you charge to modify the spindle for ls1 brakes, and how much for the caliper bracket?

i hope it does so i don't have to change those trans. gears.
