Shock/strut help

Ok so they are in serious need of replacement and I don't feel like taking it to a shop that's gonna charge me $450 to do it so thought I'd do it myself. Just by glancing at the job it doesn't seem too difficult so I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or if I'd run into any problems while doing it myself in the driveway. Also do I have shocks or struts? I have no idea how to tell the difference. It a stock 87 gta. Thanks for any help guys

The job can be done in your driveway/garage with basic handtools, though air tools can be helpful, especially with the nut on the top of the struts; the rear has shocks.

Check the Suspension How-to sticky at the top of the page.

Re: Shock/strut help

Make sure you put plenty of penetrating lube on the top strut nut. I had a terrible time getting one of mine to come loose. I had to eventually use a torch to cut the nut off.

Good Luck with the install.

Re: Shock/strut help

Breaker bar and scraped knuckles got the top strut nut off, but if at all possible, GET AIR TOOLS and save yourself some skin and blood on the struts (front)

Re: Shock/strut help

The hardest part will be having to take the rear interior panels off and pull up the carpet. I just did my rears yesterday evening. Took 30 minutes or so.

No need to remove the panels. Check the above link for photos.
