Coil Over vs. Working with the Stock mod. Strut set up

I am just getting into the chassis part of my G machine and wondering which is the better deal: a coil-over convestion or bolting aftermaket stuff to the stock modified strut unit? Pros? Cons? Thx, guys!

Bump!!!

I know that alot of people have or are planning to installed coil-overs for autocrossing and roadracing. What I want to know is whay? ie. what are the advantages.

Unless you were doing AutoX I think coil-overs are kinda overkill. A good spring/shock or strut combo would be just as good for a car that isn't going to see any kind of road course.

That is what the primary use of the car is going to be, other than hausling my but around. So why does coil overs work so well with autocrossing? Is it the adjustability?

I'm guessing it's the adjustability... quite frankly, I'm not sure. Coil-overs are ALL th craze with the ricers at my school, that's what I stay away from them :lala:


If you are gonig to AutoX and can find a set for a reasonable price, go for it.

one of the main selling points of coil overs is the weight savings from the tubular K-member.

It's the adjustability and how that benefits chassis tuning. In addition, springs for C/O's come in relatively small steps of stiffness.

Thanks guys!

I did a bit of research and aggree that the popularity of the coil overs is the adjustibility of the ride hight and the wealth of spring rates and struts that can be bolted up. But as far as I can tell, the spring and strut are a unit hand have to be hydraulically pressed to fit together.

I am going to worry about wheels, tires and braks, before I do major suspension work!
