Open element a must for these cars!
*** damn i can't believe the differance in sound and crisper throttle response. (probably froma new filter, but oh well) Deffinantly go get one if you haven't. I managed to a nice crome edlebrok with filter for $21.23 or so and it took about 10minutes to get on (several test closeings of the hood). Very easy and sounds very good.
yea that was one of the first things I bought.. I really didn't care if made a big difference.. It just looks a lot better when ya pop the hood (doesn't looks so old, my opinion). and now that i do have it and everything you can hear it suckin once in awhile when im not lazy and go clean it.. sounds much better..
K&N once again made a differnce for me!

Car: currently thirdgenless!!!
I have a dual snorkel. Chromed it before install.
Looks good, sounds good and definitely more throttle response.

sounds good boys, how many of you needed/check out my article first?
by the way, fast85, actually it makes it look OLDER, but... thats why it looks cooler, it looks presmogg era.
i will second the idea that if you do ever do anything to your car, this should be the first thing, and, if you do only one MOD ever. do this one.

Looking cool is good and all but.... It seems to me that cool air is better than all that hot air under the hood. Granted the air intake trac from stock is crappy, but with some work and little $ you can get the air from outside the hot engine bay. Just my 2cents.

well since i have never owned a smoged efi car before i read it a couple of times just to make sure, but once i did i realized that with the exception of the little sensor i would have know how to do all of the rest pretty easily. The pictures by the way help alot more than the words did at times.

show me proof that cool air makes an "i-give-a-sh$%" difference in an lo3 and i will bow to all the cold air induction guys.
sorry, my research and reading show only as much as a few tiny percent difference - equallying like 2-5hp tops.
so go for cold air induction, or go cheap and just as good open el.

I got one 'cause it looks cool (Edelbrock and K&N). I didn't notice a difference in throttle responce or sound.

I got the open element right after I bought the car, so I hadn't had time to get used to it with the stock air cleaner yet. Plus I still had my '85 Z28 at the time and was driving it most of the time.

For those lauding cold air vs. open element, why not go for the best of both worlds: cold air into an open element (via ram air, regular cowl, or Formula cowl hood)? I plan on doing this someday, when I have free time to mess with things again. I think it will make the engine compartment look less attractive, tho, what with the stuff I'll have to lump around the air cleaner to direct cold air to it.
can someone tell me which gives better performance, open element or dual snorkel?
hey joel, i live in st. louis too, and i was wondering if you ever go to Gateway Raceway? i'm there every friday night. (sorry if this is off topic)

they are equal. equal enough to decide based soley on what you want it to LOOK like.
cold air induction is good, but with the way most dual snorkel designs, ribbed hoses etc are used which slow flow giving the air time to heat up a bit. the best one ive seen is the ram air box. it is essentially an open element with 4" hoses as the snorkels. Best of both worlds, but $.
its the same principle of the new intake designs, airgap or standard. The air gap manifolds are good for about 3-5% increase in power. On an lo3, thats like 6 horse. so take your 5% and then subtract a 20% loss for power at the wheels and you see how much its worth. You could get more power by converting completely redline or another brand of synthetic fluids. ($150 though).

A buddy of mine had a air cleaner top that fit the top of my air filter an in an essence gave me an open air cleaner. When I was driving it gained in pick up and sound, but when I was just cruising around the car was jerky. It felt like the mixture was wrong, to lean. Any thought about this? LO3 motor. I want to go open but I cruise around more than I hotrod.
