In my *opinion* I think it's supposed to be around 4500RPM but then again I have 3.05 nonposi diff. So I could be wrong.

There might be something wrong with the tranny or the tach may just be inaccurate.

In 3rd a stock lo3 barely has enough power to goto 4500 rpm...

In 2nd you can bring it to 6000 rpm with no prob though, but at that rpm you're gaining very little in the acceleration department...

Are you taking about crusing at 60 in 3rd gear then flooring it to WOT and it downshifts to 2nd and pulls to 6500??

In that scenario it should shift when it hits 4500 rpm in either 1st or 2nd at WOT in stock form. Your tv cable is probably out of alignment. It's an easy adjustment, I think there's a guide somewhere on site for it.

As for shift points:

At WOT in 3rd Gear (D)

1-2 4500 RPM
2-3 4500 RPM

At WOT in 4th Gear (Overdrive)

1-2 4500 RPM
2-3 4500 RPM
3-4 <2/3 Throttle

There's a kickdown valve preventing 3-4 shift at wot.

At part throttle you can really have it shift whenever you want to, but as a rule of thumb for good shift points you want it that at minimum throttle you can force a 1-2 shift, but if you go WOT it'll automatically downshift to first again.

Car: yy wife, crazy.
Engine: 350, Vortecs, 650DP
Transmission: TH-350
Axle/Gears: 8.5", 3.42
The stock gear ratios are....

1st gear.... 3.06:1
2nd......... 1.63:1
3rd......... 1.00:1
4th......... 0.70:1

So yes, 4th gear is an overdrive gear.

The above gear ratios are input shaft:drive shaft ratios. In 1st the engine (not counting torque converter slippage, but that's a whole other topic) is spinning 3.06 times for every 1 spin of the driveshaft etc.

Once you're in 4th gear the engine's only spinning .70 (or close to 3/4 turn) times every time the driveshaft spins once. This helps cut down on engine wear and increase MPG.

If you have the gear selector in OD and you're going 60 MPH, then you floor it your trans is going from 4th back down to 3rd, or it should be. If it's going back down to 2nd then (as said earlier) you need to adjust your TV cable. And if it's holding 2nd until 6500 RPM, then you've got other issues that need to be posted in the Transmission/Driveline board.

If it is only going down to 3rd gear then it will rev to 6500 RPM because (as mentioned earlier again) the trans is set up that way. If you go past 2/3 throttle, the trans will not go into OD unless you modify it. The poor little engine will rev its ***** off until it 1. blows up or 2. you manage to hit the speed govenor which is set at ~110 MPH from the factory.

3rd gear on the lo3 cars with the 700r is good for the 110mph limiter (bounced off it a couple times) with out winding out to some ungodly rpm. If you have had some custome prom work and removed it then you may be able to get up a bit more speed, but considering how much the power is starting to drop off at that point its not likely you will make more than 120.
