freak of l03 goes back into action!
well, most of you guys read the post on my first run at the track a couple of weeks ago, and because of how i did that day they had me work, they hired me which means i can basically run test runs like once a week for free! im going there next week and ill be trying to get to the mid 15's with her.
since the last run i've modified the car a lil.
i put on an open element aircleaner and swapped out my coil which was rusting and had plates falling off of it for the one off of my parts car which was in fine condition, i pulled the throttle body and cleaned it pretty well and i've been practicing manual shifting with the tranny. seems like the carpulls harder in every gear!
what do you think ill run. place your bets guys! last run was a 15.9 at 84 mph and you can see what ive done. ill give the guy who gets the closest guess some goofy title, heck yea.

Don't know if you are doing this already or not, but I know a lot of people don't think to do it. Drive with 2 feet, you can brake torque your car off the line to get a better launch. Good luck with your goal.

i give a 15.6 @ 86 mph.
btw, i went 15.5 @ 90 and no traction, with a stock LO3, open element and computer work.

I would say mid 15's with a little practice. I wouldn't say you have a freak of an LO3 though. 90RS305 ran a 15.3 bone stock.

i know its not a freak but thats jsut what everyone knew it as originally. im hoping for a 15.6. car seems to be pulling alot harder now with the open element and the newer coil. and yea im driving with two feet. the other thing im thinking is that putting it in drive vs overdrive and also trying manual shifting. more intersted in the drive thing though. that may sound stupid but im thinking with the 2.73 ill be able to gain mph and cut time by going higher in the rpms a lil and saving time on a shift. we'll see where its trying to go into overdrive at and make the decision

Ann, there are a couple of items that are nice to know about the 700R4 transmission. As BronYrAur mentioned the stock trans will not upshift to OD at WOT. I say stock because there are modifications that can be made to change the shift characteristics.
Manual 1st will not hold 1st. The trans will still upshift to 2nd even when held in manual 1st.
Manual 2nd can be held to any RPM.
Manual 1st and 2nd use a different boost valve that increases the line pressure.
This being said starting at the line in manual 2nd has advantages.
There is a forced TCC lookup at a preset MPH. This is controlled by the ECM. Usually done around 75 MPH +-.
RBob.

someone has toyed with the car before. it will hold first for me and it will also go into overdrive at WOT. i just did 110 the other day and it wasnt in the orange band on the tach yet. ill check for sure but im pretty sure that it will do those things. if it doesnt i will be surprised. what are the conditions for it to hold 1st or not hold 1st? i often play around with it on the way home from work especialy when im at lights and i want to kick the *** around some. i put it in 1st to do, ehem, practice for emergency situations where i need to swap directions
. this car has been tinkered with for sure. we're pretty sure that it has a cam in it because the cover has obviously been pulled before but we cant say for sure. its been programed to run with a 160 degree thermostat among other things. it wouldnt surprise me to find someone had messed with the tranny because it had at least had the filter changed very recently when we did the tuneup and someone had pulled the governor cover before. too bad there isnt some way to find the original owner bet he'd like his car back! dude my name is dave, how do i change that stupid screen name so people dunt think im a chick!

The best I got out of mine before I opened up the engine was 15.0@91mph. That was with open air element, headers w/ full exhuast and 3.42 rear gears.

thats pretty funny. i hate to see how much faster we'd get if we did half the things to our our cars (integra, camry) like we do to the other ones!! may make me throw rocks at it lol

As for holding 1st gear a TransGo reprogramming kit will do it. This kit hijacks the 4-3(?, maybe the 3-2 setup, can't remember) downshift setup valve and converts it to a 1-2 manual upshift valve. It works.

Twice a year our local F-body club rents out Norwalk. The next one is in mid October. Check www.cofba.org if you want details.

I'm gonna guess a 15.8 at 85. Type hoding it till just past 5K and def. try to torque brake her to get the RPMs up at the line.

Pretty sure my 700R4 will hold first. How far does it have to wind out before manual first shifts to second?
I can't wait to get a shift kit, or drop in a T5 or T56. Although I'm sure that part of the reason my motor is in perfect shape, is the automatic's grannyshifting tendencies.
Also, I never rev the motor past 3500 rpm, never, even though I'm sure the motor could handle it. Even so, I want to get a shift kit, and a Vette governor for crisper gear changes. Just in case some guy in a Saturn SUV needs his a$$ beat.

If I remember right my buddy with a stock lo3, 2.73, 700r4, only had to shift once. first to second, I could be wrong on that though.

Pretty durn sure my tranny will hold first until the cows come home, or pop through the hood.
I have wound it out in first, and it doesn't shift until I put it in second, with a nice shift actually. From second to third, the clutches take longer to hand over power, not slipping, just fluffing around in grand auto fashion. I go from 1, to 2, to D, whenever shifting manually, which is almost never.
I've heard the shift kit, eg. Transgo, and the Vette governor, give crisper and more satisfying shifts. Also, a ratchet shifter will prevent an overzealous amateur racer from sliding into "R for Racing" in the heat of the moment.
So a shift kit and ratchet shifter are on my wishlist. Then down the road, I want to be rowing the gears with a T56, running LS1 power...

sorry to argue with anyone about the overdrive at WOT thiung. you were completely right and everytime i test that im reminded of just how pathetic the top end on these cars is. 2.73's and im creeping past 100.

umm my bone stock l03 withj 273 gears will do 110 without hitting the orange either, its the gears at allow this, it won't peg out until i hit 120 (about 5000 rpms) and won't shift into over drive, if it did it may drop maybe 3-500 rpms
but a dodge durango r/t will actually shift into 4th gear at 120 mph that was the strangest experience for me

Ya man, same here, my LO3 TBI pulls past a hunge no problem, and have had it at 115 with lots of pedal to go. Didn't want to push farther though, because I'd just gotten the car, and wasn't sure what kind of shape everything's in. No OD though. Won't do any Top Gun stuff until I have suspension more dialed in, and the motor thoroughly tuned. Still pulls hard at 100 mph, nice and smooth. Loves it.
Wondering if my car has a governor, as some did, limiting them to 115mph. Anybody know? 1991 Firebird 305 TBI.
