air gap problem
When you un-hook the hose the car runs, right? When the hose is un-hooked, do you plug the hose, or is it open.
If it is open(unplugged) and it runs, then you aren't getting enough air into the motor. Either the TBI min throttle blade setting is too far closed, or your IAC is not working, and the motor is running off of the air it sucks in through the hose. That's why when you hook it up to the booster it dies.
Or if you plug the hose and the car runs, then yes your booster went bad for no reason, Sometimes that just happens.

I am going to guess that it is a sensor/vacuum or timing problem. I would say that it is most likely a timing issue, but I am not eliminating the potential to have a loose wire, loose or broken connector, disconnected sensor, a broken/missing vacuum hose, etc. Do you have the MAP sensor connected to manifold vacuum? What about the IAC? TPS? CTS? IAT? EST? ETC.
Pull the number one spark plug, have somebody bump the engine over with the starter until number 1 comes up on the compression stroke (put your thumb over the spark plug hole, NOT IN!). Now take a socket and line the balancer up to 0* on the timing tab. Now pull the distributer cap and rotor. Loosen the distributer. You can no line up the reluctor ring and star with each other. You will now be very close to 0* timing. Make sure that the rotor lines up with the #1 spark plug terminal and wire on the cap. Make sure that you have the proper 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order. 1-3-5-7 on the driverside, 2-4-6-8 on the passenger, front to back. Distributer rotation is clockwise for a standard rotation small block.
