Open air element???

I wanted to change my 305 TBI into the open air. I was looking at a summit catalog and didn't know which one to get.
Any suggestions would be great
They have : all $60
K&N: 14' 3'
14' 4'
14' 5'
Edlebrock makes two different ones
Elite is about $60
the other is about $25
Both 14' 3'
And summit has a 14' 3' for about $20

Can anyone tell me the best one and if there is anydifference between them. On the ult tbi in the tech section it looks to be the cheaper edlebrock should i just get that one???

Is the highest i can get the 3'

i dont think three inches is the highest you can go. I think you could go 4 if you got a non drop base aircleaner bottom. Im pretty sure i remember measuring this. I couldnt try it beacause i have a drop base. Stupid me, and my linkage is custom made for the 454 tbi, and it sticks up above where the nondrop would be. So it would hit.

If i were doing this over again, i would get a non drop base generic 14" aircleaner bottom and a lid and buy a 4inch paper filter. if it doesnt fit, take it back and get a 3" k&n. If it does fit, use it till its worn out and then get the 4" k&n or just take it back too, and get the 4" kn right away.

Thats what i wish i would have done

O yeah, and where you at in omaha, theres a couple of us on here. I want us to get together sometime. Email me.

YES. exactly. I went through 3 open elements before I found the right one. I got a generic PAW 14x2.25" open element for $17
when I decided on the right height with different paper filter I finally got a K&N one

I currently am running an K&N 14"x2.25" air cleaner on the top of my L03. With the stock intake manifold the wing nut is digging into the badding on the hood. Keep in mind that most aftermarket intakes will tend to be slightly taller. I also drilled a hole in the bottom of the manifold so I could retain the stock position of the Intake Air Temperature sensor. Make sure to get some vacuum caps so you can block of the vacuum port on the TBI unit that used to go to the THERMAC. You will not need this anymore and shoul not see any adverse effects.

As far as size goes, taller is not always better. A tall element can actually cause more turbulence in the air stream resulting in les flow. A flatter element (one that is large in diameter but smaller in height) helps to smooth out airflow and direct it into the engine better. Bigger is not always better, especially in this case.

When I put mine own, I didn't notice any real performance gains except maybe a little bit on the top end. I attribute this to the stock snorkel being a restriction when the engine is at high RPMs and thus sucking more air.

The best part about this mod was the sound, around 5000 RPM under WOT it wails, sounds kind of like a jet under the hood. I highly recommend it.

Any question, feel free to ask,

Jason

Nope, your right, and you can do it. But I just stuck it back inside the air cleaner. The K&N open element has a hole underneath it where u can drill and put it back in. But they have kits where u can relocate it somewhere or u can just try and do it yourself. It just didn't seem worth it to me i guess.

Yes only one vacuum cap, but you probably cant buy just one.
Going with the K&N huh?

Anyway, Damn nice car, a real collectors item, show condition all the way.

Good luck with your first mod John, hope I helped out at least a little yesterday.
