Needs to be more fun to drive!!!!!!!!!

I got a 89 305tbi auto, have not done all that much to it, headers, y-pipe, cat, underdrive, and other small stuff like wires plugs, open air filter. I want the car to be more fun to drive, my winter beater a 91 susuki swift 5-speed is more fun to drive.

Will swapping the rear end and getting some tranny work accomplish this. Also I have been told that swapping to the eddlebrock intake and a cam will give me some good seat of the pants improvements, any sudgestions?

Yes, swap the rear end for a posi 3.42 or 3.73. You can get used 3.73 gears out of S-10's.

Check this post: https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/001918.html and hopefully it will answer some questions.

It obviously didn't work for One Eyed Jack - even though he got many suggestions. "Give a man a fish..." Pretty funny though that he felt empowered with enough knowledge to give you advice on a shift kit... wonder if he has installed one...?

Realize that your Suzuki is (a) lighter than your car and (b) geared differently than your car. Swap gears/rear end, install a TransGo shift kit, work the suspension and then start saving up for a bigger badder engine.

From what you're saying, and all that, I agree w/ Tas that it seems to come down to the manual transmission.

Few will argue that a manual is more fun than an auto. Even manually shifting the auto isnt the same.

Since youre exposed so frequently to a manual, you arent forgetting how fun that is.

So, I, like tas, would recommend either upgrading to a manual, or I would even go as far as recommending seeing if you could trade for a camaro that already has a stick in it.

Either way, I think a manual will solve your problems.

Yeah, I agree about the manual. Take out a transmission that has a chance of holding up to some horsepower, and put in a T-5. She'll be LOTS of fun to drive then. You'll have hours of good times thinking about how much fun it is to drive, as it sits in the garage with a blown T-5.
Auto's aren't much fun, but they're more consistent, can be built up, and are generally stronger (not including Tremec, T-56).

Since when is a T-5 weak? Havent heard anything but good about the 87+. Though, if it were my choice I'd get a T-56 just cause thats one more gear you get.

I have owned two sticks, and two automatics. The automatics both died, needing a rebuild. The sticks gave me no trouble besides the need to changed the clutch. Period.

Besides that, he's looking for fun, not outright consistence. Sure the auto will never EVER miss a shift, so what? I'd trade in my auto for a stick in a heartbeat.

Just me though.

I can personally vouch for the "fun factor" associated with a T-5...mine is a blast. There's nothing like having total control. However, I have to agree about them not handling much power. Heck, they wouldn't even put a T-5 behind the 245hp L98 350. I'm planning on eventually swapping in a 350 HO/T56 combo one day...that will be (fun)^2

Get rid of that slush box and put a real transmission in it, a good 88 or later WC T-5 is really fun to drive and will hold up to a 305 easy, I should know, I have given mine hell for 140,000 miles and it still shifts like new and still has the original clutch in it too, as long as you don't side step the clutch pedal at 5000 RPM and power shift it, they will hold up fine.

Muncie 4 speed. It would be indestructable behind a 305. I powershift mine almost everyday, and is keeps on trucking. I do not thing it would be too hard to swap one in. You could use an aftermarket hydro slave cylinder for them, and a competition plus shifter. Then you would have the ultimate in transmission heavy duty.
