Why is there a bolt pulging this hole?

QUestion!! I bought my new water pump and the new one has a tube on the top. It matches the stock perfectly, except the stock one has a plug on the top with a SQUARE head. Now I don't know about you, but while flipping through my manual i noticed a hose going to that in some of the pictures. But my car never had a hose going to it. WHAT THE FRICK??

Now understand Capt. Planet did a hack job number on my car, I won't even go into detail on the wiring job, gssh, but looks like someone tried to fix the water pump before, won't mention the nails. And then there was no F**ing theremostat in the car.

Anyone have any thoughts or idea on this one??

Typically used as a heater hose return line OR a thermostat bypass line, if needed. It is an INPUT line to the H2O pump.

Yep, old school heater hose return line. I have a tech article about how to do it on a thirdgen to get rid of the stupid heater switch.

That's how I have my heater core hooked up. The coolant supply comes from the front of the intake, and returns to the water pump. I've been told by some old-school motor-heads that this is a better way of doing it, and some how the heat will work better. I really have no idea if that's true, but I had to run mine like that since the Holley intake I have doesn't have the rear water cross-over.

It works better because you have the coolant "push" from the intake manifold area, through the core and the coolant "pull" from the pump at that hook-up location. Efficiently and ALWAYS have good flow through the heater core.

JP, do you have that article handy? I'm about ready to put my engine back in my car and would love to eliminate some of those "EXTRAS" that lay on top of the motor!

You guys have come through again without me even having to ask the question.

I have a Howe aluminum radiator to install that does not have the heater return line on it.

All I have to do is pull the plug out of the top of the pump and run the line to there if I understand correctly.
