TBI or Carb?? and other Q's
Hey guys. I just bought a 1992 rs, and I was trying to figure out which one it is. My dad says its a carb because it sits ontop of the engine, but I didn't think they used carbs on thirdgens. So, is there any easy way to tell if its a carb or TBI? And if it turns out to be TBI, what all would need to be done for me to convert it to a carb? And final question, its from a lower altitude and isn't tuned for my altitude, so how do I tune it up so it doesn't have a hesitation and stops on me when I don't gas it through a corner? Thanks for all the help!

Re: TBI or Carb?? and other Q's
There were no carbs from the factory after 1987, so unless it's been converted it's TBI. No tuning for altitude is required in either case.
Why would you want to convert to carb?

If you take the air cleaner off, and look inside - carb is plain, TBI has 2 injectors inside.
Colorado is a emissions **** state - it's not going to be legal there unless this is a track only car as far as I know - may be certain locals where it's not checked.
You'll get very little added hp from a carb - not worth the effort on a 305 really - at least not THAT 305. The heads suck, the exhaust is very restrictive, the intake is restrictive, you have mileage rear gears not speed rear gears, a very mileage-friendly low performance cam.
To swap to carb at all, you need a carb, a carb intake, a vac-adv distributor, a fuel pressure regulator, geometry correctors for TV cable and method for locking the torque converter (last 2 if automatic tranny). Depending on what brands of stuff you buy - that's about $700 - $1000 spent just for the swap, that you won't even notice any power gains from because of the restricted heads and exhaust.
You have alot of work to do and money to spend before buying any 'high performance' carb is going to be noticeable at all. It's just not worth the effort/money for the 305. IF you could get inspected in your area with a carb, your money would be better spent on exhaust (transfers to a 350), suspension, rear gears, etc getting the car ready for a 350 swap, then carb a 350 instead.

Re: TBI or Carb?? and other Q's
Alright. I was going to do a knn intake system and I'm having a catback exhaust system done in a few weeks. Ill just save from the carb swap and put it towards a few other ideas me and my friend had. And emissions isn't big in my county, maybe other parts of the state but not where I live (thankfully).

I checked, its stock TBI. So what could be causing the hesitation at low speeds? Carbon buildup?

Re: TBI or Carb?? and other Q's
From a dead stop when I push the pedal in it takes a second or two to really start going, and it only happens around 0-15mph. And the car dies if I try to take a slow corner and don't gas it.
