stock motor balancer
looking into a possible timing issue and was looking a blancer and the rubber has cracks all the way around. I wanted to know what is recomended for a stock motor. seen dorman, pioneer, proform. does one absorb vibes more than another. not look to sppend much must definitely dont want some bs [parts.
i went to check timing and the reading would be steady for a bit the get a few erractic movements so idk if the rotational force on pullly or both it and timing are a factor. 165,000. idle is starting to get a shake off and on afrter closed loop. when accelerating slow nothing noticed but with quick increase of throttle car bogs down a second and i get a miss or two. makes me think the chain is stretching with load.

Re: stock motor balancer
A dorman product is fine. Probably going to be the cheapest. I am using one of those tiny pioneer ones and I have had no problems. Been on my car for years.

Re: stock motor balancer
a smaller damper puts less drag on the rotating assembly helping you rev faster and stuff. The damper size does not affect belt length as the belt length is determined by the crankshaft pulley.

Re: stock motor balancer
do you want to go back with OEM part. I can help you with this. Part number 12551849. Somewhere around $80.00 should do it.

Re: stock motor balancer
well that part number didnt come up with anything. think ill just go with the dorman replacement. just need something basic. took a good look at mine earlier and the rubber is sunk in random places. hope the basic cloyes timing set will suffice. original one has made it 18 years and just now showing signs of being stretched.

Re: stock motor balancer
i went with the basic cloyes. i did notcice the timing is advanced like crazy but never notice anything while driving
Re: stock motor balancer
Cloyes makes many different quality level chains. If you went with the $20 cheapie, you bought a crappy cain set. The absolute dirt-cheapest chain set I've found that won't stretch like salt water taffy in only few thousand miles is the Summit house brand true roller (about $35 for use with falt tappet cams). Anything cheaper is junk. The GMPP single roller chain set is an excellent one for use with a FACTORY ROLLER-STYLE cam and is high quality despite the fact it's only a single row chain. It also fits under all stock timing covers and clears the top oil galley boss without grinding.
Re: stock motor balancer
The thing does not BALANCE anything on your engine.
Better name is "Torsional Damper". Some folks call it a vibration damper, and that's accurate too. Some dampers (400 and 454 Chevy, for example) have some affect on engine balance--but calling them a damper is still accurate.
Most any low-dollar aftermarket damper is going to be Made In China. Good luck with them. Ever seen what a Chinese damper looks like after it explodes?
Be sure the unit you buy has the timing mark in the correct place to match your timing pointer.
