1988 firebird 305 tbi

Car starts up quick and then shuts off when trying to idle. I have to keep pressing the pedal to keep it on but it idles extremely rough and then shuts off. So far we've replaced spark plugs and wires. Distributor and module. Rebuilt the throttle body and iac valve. Checked vaccuum lines and loose wires... Tried to check codes but engine light wouldn't flash for codes and also tbi shoots out what seems to be fuel like it backfires. Any ideas here? Thanks for the help...I'm completely lost

 

Also replaced the fuel filter and gas is good.

 

I am having the same issue. It ran fine, just quit when idling. Fuel filter and pump replaced. Good Fuel pressure.

 

rubber line in fue ltank that conects the pump to the metal pick up splits . do a pressure ck doesn't matter that you can see fuel in the tb and hear pump kick on . ran fine then all of a sudden this happened rite?

 

Had same problem with my 89 TA... checked / replaced injectors... fuel pressure ok (well, comes out of thing on engine when you press it down) and still wouldn't idle.

Been driving it for last 2 years with the mass air flow sensor disconnected. Starts and runs great like that, but car won't run with it connected. Even replaced it with new one and it won't run with it connected.

Idols ok too... maybe a little high... usually 800 - 900.

Don't ask me, but see if yours idols with the mass air flow sensor unplugged.... I'd be interested to see if that fixes it.

 

I am convinced that waynes problemis in the tank. wish he would give us an update , as its been a while since his post . Whats up wayne?

 

Check coolant temp sensor. Mine crapped out and the car would flood out at idle unless i held the throttle open a bit.

 

I would additionally check the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve)...

 

two votes for fuel tank. . bad pump or the hose is broken inside...

 

It is probably a MAF Sensor issue. Try using some MAF cleaner on it and see if that helps
