Open Element Size

I am getting ready to buy a K&N open element for my 92 camaro RS. I have to V8 5.0 engine, but I am not sure how big an assembly I can get. Exactly how much clearance is there??? Also what have you guys heard about the X-Stream assembly, where the top piece is a filter too.... Thanks

I'm using a K&N 14x3" Element on my 92 TBI RS.
Am using the Moroso Flatbottom Racing Air Cleaner (part#65911)base and lid.Clears the hood fine(with Edelbrock Performer TBI Intake Manifold).
If you get a drop base air cleaner, you'll have to use the spacer to clear the linkage(or modify the base). The X-Stream lid works well, but as close to the hood as our air cleaners are, I doubt it'll make much difference.
K&N Part#60-1263 looks like it'll work fine.

you can go 3" for sure. get the non-drop base, and remove the air cleaner spacer ring.

How do you tell is an assembly is a drop base or non-drop base?? I am looking at K&N Part #KNN-60-1264. I have no idea how to tell which it is so I know what I will have to do when I install it.

Look at your stock air cleaner assembly. Notice how the outisde part of it sits lower than the inside. That is called a drop base. A non drop base supposedly flows better (which makes sense...), but you must remove the air cleaner spacer ring.

spacer

Guys - I may be a rookie - but wouldn't removing the spacer be a bad idea? They're sold in Summits and stuff to increase the velocity of the air entering the TBI Unit (look at it as cutting down the angle as the air comes into the cleaner horizontally and turns 90' to go down vertically). I've got a drop base moroso unit and a 1 inch base spacer and i retained the cleaner assembley spacer (that sits on the TBI) and i clear fine and it keeps everythign smooth.

Because you're shrowding the openign of the TBI. The air doesn't have a staright shot to the mouth of the TBI. It has to make a 90* turn down and then go in. On top of that, the injector pod blocks the opening even more.

With a flat base, the air come straight in from the filter, to the center and down the TBI.
