Smoke and strange noise.
I have a '84 T/A Recaro edition with auto tranny. When i push my car to it's limits (but not very hard really) there's a smoke coming out of from the back where the tires are (actually right above the tires). And it smells burnt oil.And i also have a problem with the transmission i guess. It makes that "tick-tick" sound when the car is cold. And this sound gets faster or slower with the rpm.But it does the same sound sometimes when i'm driving and when the engine is hot but not always. There's no loss of performance or strange things happening. My gears are still smooth.the trans. oil is at it's normal level and the car doesn't leak anything.Does anyone has an idea what might be the problem.Thanks.

what you describe it sounds like you are burning oil. Could be bad rings or a problem with the valve stem seals..not uncommon with a high miles motor. Sounds like your exhaust system is in need of replacement if smoke is coming from the wheel wells.
Alot of thirdgens have been abused...with a little TLC you can get her back on track...let us know of any specific problems we can help you with...

Where is Mtl

Mtl is in Canada.I'm sure you know Montreal.
.The smoke was coming out after i parked the car (from the rear wheels) and the engine was not running. And it smelled burnt oil.I thought it could be transmission or the posi. And i'm not loosing any engine or transmission oil.The noise that i'm talking about is coming around the shift ****.Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Re: Smoke and strange noise.
Although this thread is from seven or so years ago, I'm going to put in my 2 cents
anyway to try to help anyone with this problem; sounds like parking brake to me. Overused brake odor can be mistaken for burning oil if you're not someone who regularly works around cars. Also would explain the smoke coming from the wheelwells. I had that very problem a few years back after replacing a parking brake cable. After readjusting the cable the problem went away. I hope this helps.
