Did you drive it while it was overheating?

Dang, I drove mine for about two minutes on the edge of my seat with the temp gauge peged at 250. But I kept my eye on my oil temp which didn't do above 225. (Threw a belt BTW) I got home & poped the belt on, and then let the engine idle down to temp. woooo

Two minutes for me is just to long, cause my nerves can't handle the thought of warping thousand dollar heads, among other things.

BTW: Engine death caused by over heating happens all the time, but normaly to people who are not paying attention to there gauges?

Good Luck with rebuilding the engine, maybe with more power

Ron

Well you are 16 so this can be a learning experience. If you had just stopped the car and had it towed to where you needed to go your engine would still be alive , no matter how much the towing bill would hurt right then I seriosly doubt it comes anywhere near what its going to cost you to get your car on the road now.

Good luck.

THAT IS SO TRUE "EVILT/A. i lost this '69 Camaro Pace car(see image) because I did not have the money(poor college student in the mid 70's) for a tow until payday(the next week). When I came back to get my car it was stripped to the metal. LESSON LEARNED! Imagine how much that car would be worth if I had it today.

The First thing I fixed on my '86 when I got it was the cooling system. REMEMBER THIS, these 3rd gens will over heat in a heartbeat. Invest in a working fan and fan motor, a good 160/180 thermo, a good fan relay/switch, and a temperature guage(preferably Auto meter mechanical).

AS MY DEAR OLD MOTHER USE TO TELL ME, "Bought knowledge is the Best".

Good luck with the rebuild. Take your time since you have the car and do it right. It will be worth the wait.

Well, dont give up hope. I picked up a used 305 to stick in my TA and spent around $400 including the cost of the engine, gaskets, etc. Sold my old one for $225, so it cost me a grand total of $175 plus time for the swap. That is if you could swap it yourself like I did. And its still running, runs pretty good. Take a look around, you might find something.

Keep an eye out for a used motor you can stick in that thing... Maybe try and find a recently wrecked vehicle with a 350 and pull that sucker out and swap it into your car. Of course, change whatever parts over to keep it smog legal btw, what year car?

Man, just go to a boneyard and fine a wrecked Caprice or truck with a 350 and slam it in there! I got the 350 in my girlfriends camaro for $200 COMPLETE, and it was even a low mileage crate motor, a major score, but an example of what you COULD find. And swapping a motor in is a no brainer, especially if its an auto. Just unbolt exhaust, motor mounts, bell housing, and torque converter bolts, doesn't get any easier. Just rent a cherry picker and get the help of some friends to guide the motor out and put the new one in. I'm selling a Crate motor 305 with practically no miles for $400 complete but it doesn't help you much since I'm in Tucson,

seems like you had plenty of notice that you had a problem, it could have just been a $6 thermostat.... but live and learn.

seems like your only choices are to put in that 'rebuilt' 305 or sell you car and get squat for it which makes that 305 swap sound real good right about now. just make sure you go through your cooling system before you blow this motor too

If you've got the motor already, what's the problem? Rent a hoist, buy a $60 motor stand, and swap motors. Worry about finding a better motor later. (At worst, you'll be able to sell the car for more with a working engine!) As you take your car apart, buy a polaroid camera, take pictures of every little thing you can think of- especially the way the wires are routed. And buy a $15 Haynes 82-92 Camaro book for all the torque specs, and rent a torque wrench. Good luck, seems like you've got your project ahead of you! Keep us posted.

well you all are going to laugh, THE ANGLES HAVE SMILED UPON ME, my motor did not blow, no dammage, cept the cracked radiator, my mechanic was explaining it to me, he got mad he thought he was gonna have to drop that engine in there, but well, i guess i started it up at the wrong time cause he said, i put racing oil in there for a reason just straight 50 weight, he said i wanted it protected, well it got so hot the oil was boiling , and so the crank bearings werent having any oil, so thats why i heard the knocking, and why no oil pressure, cause no oil to circulate, it was so thin, started it up today fine, perfect oil pressure no nosies, nothing melted, so were ripping off the radiatior and fixing the cooling system tommorrow at 10 ill keep yah guys posted, ps ill put up some pics of the engine tommorrow

Well dont' think the "angles" are smiling on you just yet. Just because the motor starts and has oil pressure doesn't mean you didnt' **** anything up. Running an engine dry is VERY bad. Do this, at the VERY least. Pull off a valve cover and see if any of the rocker arms are cracked in half. Trust me on this, I had a friends camaro overheat a bunch of times and after they fixed the overheating problem the car still ran like ***.....turned out to be a couple of snapped rocker arms caused by the overheating. Also, run regular oil, like 10W40 or even 20W50. I'm glad your motor didn't blow up though, I've been there done that and unexpected motor swaps suck ***.
