82 CFI to 89 SSE
82 CFI to 89 SSE
Down the street, there is an 89 Firebird SSE for sale. It has the GTA gfx, red with a 3.8L V6. The body is much better than mine, as well as the interior.
Now, this car has a 4 speed Auto with O/D. Would my 305 CFI fit in that 89 SSE with the 4 speed?

Not to the tranny. Different bolt pattern. Also, the internals are different and wouldn't last too long.
Frankly, if you are looking for a "swap" candidate, find a V8 car with a burnt-out motor. Swapping a V6 to V8 requires a lot of work.
No offense, but WHY would you want to swap CFI? If the engine is "sound", I'd consider a different intake.

I love my CFI, don't get me wrong. Hehe, I get alot of compliments on how good the CFI looks (people haven't seen it around here). I've been having tranny problems as well as the body falling apart.
I saw the 89 and thought "well I could throw everything in there and get a good tranny out of it as well as the body being in much better shape."
Plus, my gas mileage is *rap right now. So a V6 doesn't sound that bad right now.

I'm looking at it price wise. Really, having a V6 or V8 (for now) really doesn't bother me. But moving out and not having the money to fix it would.
Plus, this body is like the GTA's, no T-Tops and the interior is much better. All of the stuff I wanted to do to my 82 is already done on the 89, so the money issue wouldn't be an issue.
Oh another question, are all 3rd Gens parts (gear box, radiator, etc) interchangable?
Please give your 2 cents (without bashing me too hard
) I am really stuck here.

I just noticed that you live in California. You probably are not going to be allowed to swap your 82 engine/ecm to a later year car.
As for "interchangability" between 3rd Gens? The answer is "some are and some aren't", depends on the part and which car are involved.
The biggest difference (other than different years) is usually between Camaros and Firebirds. You'd be surprised how different the two cars are sometimes. Even when they are the same year and engine.
Sounds like you need a "good daily driver" and the 82 has seen better days. My adice, sell the 82 and get a newer car. If you want power, go for a V8 car. If you want fuel economy, go with the V6.
Just remember that it is easier to do a "V8 swap" on a V8 car. If you like manuals, then I'd suggest a TBI 305 5-speed car (if funds are limited). Then you can swap to a 350 and possibly SD TPI (with an aftermarket intake that is emissions compliant) when money is more plentiful.

Thanks for your help Glenn91L98GTA. I didn't know the hassle of changing from V6 to a V8. I want to get a newer 3rd Gen like you said, so i'll just stick with what I have.
