how to convert a flat tappet motor to a roller motor?
got the 350 crate, which is a flat tappet motor (i think) and want to pick up some more horses when we do the cam. now, what all do you need to switch over to a roller motor. obviously a roller cam and lifters, but anything else?

I think you will have to get aftermarket roller lifters. The factory ones were desiged to only work in a "roller" block. This block had provisions for roller lifters in that the lifter bore height was different so the lifter holders could be installed. These holders keep the lifters from turning in their bores and were held in place with a spider as some people call it. This sprider bolts to the block in the lifter valley. Non roller blocks do not have the provisions to mount this spider except some early '86 blocks. Remember GM went to roller cams in late '86 and all of '87 and up V8 cars. Some trucks did not get roller cams until the mid 90's.
New GM crate motors should have roller cams already from all of the ones I looked at.

Todds right, but Crane and Comp make a retro fit hydraulic roller setup. If you planned on buying a stock GM or any regular roller cam and lifter set they wouldn't work. Everyone else is right on with the other accesories, but remember to ask for the retro fit cam and lifters. If the block is not a flat tappet block and a roller block, then don't listen to me.
