A word from England

This is totally non-tech, and I know it'll get locked pretty quick, but I just wanted you guys to know that my thoughts are with you all today, 9/11. And I'm positive I speak for all my countrymen on this, a most sensitive day.

I just wish the mercinary media would get off the bandwagon and put away the hype. For the last several days it's been all they've had on TV

Clearly, they are convinced they can jack up advertising rates if they pump up what is other peoples' misery into a saleable commodity.

And they wonder why the media are despised

Thanks for the thoughts. I knew no one effected by the attacks, but most people I know ended up putting little american flags in their yards and on their cars. Even my dad did that, but I made him take it down because of how worn out and faded the flag was.

Over here you see a whole lot of pressure to "jump on the bandawagon" as Sitting Bull put it, on the radio and television, in newspapers and magazines, and even from common people who have already succumb. Yeah, it's sad. Yeah, it's a tragedy. But I haven't changed because of it. I was more angry than saddened by it. But after a year of seeing it everywhere, I'd be happy if it was no longer everywhere. You're constantly reminded of it driving down the freeway. "Remember 911" is plastered on every building and adhered to every bumper. People are throwing it out of proportion.

Some people are scared to go to New York now. I've heard of people having emergency routes out of their homes in case of terrorist attack. Why? That is ridiculous. But worst of all, people are afraid to fly in planes now, ignorant to the fact that they probably have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning while in their home than falling victim to a terrorist attack. All of the hype is not a bad thing, but the fear is.

Probably one of the most stunning and memorable tributes I saw came the next day. During the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, the Queen's regiment played the Star Spangled Banner instead of *** Save the Queen. I was left totally speechless. I have searched for a video of that news clip and have never been able to find one.

edit: You can't say G o d on this board? G o d save us!

I don't mind the media coverage. I don't really watch it much but I hope we never forget this. Just imagine if that was your wife or father standing on the upper floors and jumping to their death to escape the heat. Those bastards ruined peoples lives and now they dance in the streets celebrating it. They say it was ***'s punishment. Those people they mutilated had nothing to do with what is happening in their countries and would probably help anyone of them if they could.

Thanks for the message SI, when I saw the Royal Marines had been deployed to Afganistan I was pretty fired up. I had a chance to see them in action in a patrol competition in Wales. Those dudes are bad ***.

Si,

Nearly everywhere, people are at the very least recognizing the anniversary of that day, just as many of us still recognize December 7, August 6, and other significant days in world history.

Our thoughts are also with all those who lost their familes, friends, and countrymen on that day. Britain was not left untouched, as were many countries that were called "home" by the victims of those cowardly terrorists. Men from the nations that sponsored and abetted the terrorists gave up innocent lives in those attacks.

Our thoughts are with you as well, and all our brothers that stand with us against this cowardly enemy. You know who you are.

Even those who celebrated the falling of the towers and the destruction at the Pentagon remember this date. And they, too, should continue to remember this anniversary. This is the date on which they awoke the anger and resolve in all those civilized men, men who were in the past patient and tolerant, and men who now have the power, the will, and the means to exterminate them and their kind.

When that day arrives, I will remember and celebrate that date as well, only I will remember it longer, and I will celebrate.

Incidentally, it is my feeling that even though the topic is not technical in nature, if qualifies under the directive from Dirk indicating that 9/11 related posts would be acceptable provided that normal decency and common sense is exercized. To my recollection, that directive was never recinded. If I am asked to lock or delete it, I would, but until then I'll stand by that.

I've actually appreciated all of the stories of tragedy and survival he media has worked so hard to gather up for this anniv. 9-11. I ignore the commercial and profit aspect of it all because that's just how its always been..... Now I don't recall seeing a commercial on "the day" one year ago!

I wouldn't go to say that this is one of the worst tragedies ever, for there are many more forgotten by many who are atrocious (WWII; concentration camps and taking back the countries over-run). It is a depressing tragedy non the less.. aimed to blind, cripple and full of vengence on the United States of America, as well as countiries supporting their philosophies and causes.

One thing that I have wondered is WHY. All thoughout the media coverage I have heard opinions and such, but never something that I could belive as to why somebody would go do something soo horrid. I see, "they attacted our FREEDOM!" and I see that they attacted a financial heart and military heart of america.
Being a non american (canadian), I've been able to see a bit clearer.. what I see is a greiving country, trying to fufill it's desiers of vengence thoughout warfare.. which is the only way I see it done to take out terrorist. But I see a very bloodthirsty Nation blinded by the rage that it'll do anything to satisfy it..
Dropping bombs on canadians trying to help out, out there because "..they had guns and were firing them at something".... and killing innocent muslums (spelling?) and others in Afganistan, creating and imposing their rules in a very very different culture. Scaring them all (aka :"Who knows what town the United States of American will find some terrorist in and erase it from the maps along with everything else breathing and non breathing there.")
The United States of America, where the personal rights of an individual are now pushed aside if anything starting with the word "terror" is assumed. Where "security" is soo tight that a person's freedoms are comprimized.. the very thing that was attacked in the first place..
I pity the fool who's in the way of the United States of America, because it is trully a grand, powerfull and united Country. One who i envy.
On this day, greive for those who have died, for it is a time of greiving.. but.. not a time of anger and of judgement. Because in a time such as these, the quick decisions made isn't always the best. Anger clouds judgement. Greive for those who have fallen with the twin towers, for those lost on the planes that crashed and for those who have lost their lives in the "War on Terrorism".

i live in nj, and the closer u get to the wtc, the more it affects you, and the more likely u know someone who died. my brother lives in the city and is nypd, and was on the streets doing what he could, he was one of the lucky ones who survived. my gf lost an uncle. and unless u had ever been there to see those buildings, you cant imagine how big they were.

I took a vacation to your fine country in 2000 and stayed in NYC for 3 days. We travelled all over the city, and one of the places we stopped at was the WTC. I didn't go inside the towers, but I strained my neck looking up at the tops. We also went to the viewing platform of the Empire State Building, and I took a photograph of the New York skyline, the twin towers being the focal point of the picture. When the tragedies struck, my dad phoned me and reminded me that the photo I am so proud of was taken in the morning of September 11th 2000 - exactly one year before the strike. It dawned on me that we had flown in to Newark airport on a United Airlines flight on 9/11/00. Had the terrorists struck one year earlier.....I don't want to think about that.

Nowhere near as bad as some peoples' experience, but that sure got me thinking.
