Put eng. back in.....isnt running right

I just put the eng. back in....383... 750 edelbrock carb, performer rpm intake....lumpy cam.. hydraulic. i dont have a timing gun handy so i put the timing at 8* on the balancer and put the dist. lined up with the # 1 wire. when i first fired it up it cranked and cranked, i checked for spark and fuel ..it was getting both. so i pumped the carb a little and it fired up. i have to hold it at about 3000 rpms or it slowly drops till it stalls. i richened the carb up and i could hold it at 2000 rpms before it drops and stalls. when it gets around 1500 rpms if i give it a little gas it backfires through the carb. is what im doing to set the timing by hand an acceptable way of doing it? seems like i have to pump the carb up a little for it to start on the first crank. it back fires alot if its about to stall while below 1500 rpms. im pretty sure this is a timing related problem?

Sounds like the timing is off and you're running lean.

i wouldn't touch the car or engine again untill i had a timing light, there's no way for you to know what you have without one. you might want to consider running the valves too, after you set the base timing.
