Manifold glowing orange

91, camaro rs 3.1
My car has been eating spark plug wires. what i mean is its been melting down the boots. I'v gone through about 4 sets in a month. I drove for about a half hour and got home and poped the hood and saw the passenger side manifold glowing orange out side of one of the cylinders.
Why would it do this?
thanks
chris

look for an injector sticking open (or leaking) in the cylinder that corresponds to the glowing red section of the manifold

how do you figure?

it sounds like you may be running lean. check your fuel pressure regulator.

Might have an injector not flowing enough and running that cylinder very lean, not a good thing to drive around on. and being on the passenger side the O2 sensor can't help by triggering a light for lean condition.

i've always heard of glowing exhaust manoifolds from being too rich

so rich, that the fuel is still igniting inside the exhaust manifold making it glow

i think it would be way more complicated if was caused by a lean condiditon

do a search on glowing exhaust primaries 1991 tealt-topguy or whatever your name is. everyone suggest it is lean...when they richen the mixture up, the problem is solved. i don't know the physics behind it, i just know what causes the problem and how to rectify it.

If it is overly rich the cylinder temp will be cool becauce the fuel that didn't get burned is cooling the combustion chamber. Lean burning ie very hot and makes headers/manifolds glow from the heat.

I would suggest you take a look at your timing; it may be retarded.

Lean condition. Sticky/plugged injector small intake manifold leak PS intake but that would cause high idle.

when i first heard of glowing manifolds so long ago (never happened to me) i thought it was a lean condition that caused it

then a few people told me it was a too rich of a condition

now, that i think about it, the rich theory seems more far fetched than running lean

thanx for the correction

Two causes of glowing.

Lean causes a slight glow, usually, dependign on how lean.

MASSIVELY retarded timing will cause a BRIGHT glow, and sometimes even make the yy-pipe glow orange. This is because the air-fuel mixture was ignited so late, it is still combusting on its way out the exhaust.

Good way to melt a cat... ask me how I know...

He has noted that it is just on the one cylinder's exhaust port, this leads me to believe it is an injector causing one cylinder to run lean.

Sorry, I wasn't answering the original question, just trying to dispel some of the above confusion.

In the end

A buddy of mine told me to change the o2 sensor it was bad so i did and with some new wires it seems to be running even better than when i bought the car also it runs temp cooler.

the 02 sensor is in the y-pipe after the 2 sides join on a v6 car... at least it was on my 2.8 cars.
