Sounds like either fan switch or knock sensor.

What kind of motor and where exactly is it? Which side, front or rear, up high or down low, etc.

Fan switch

It's an electrical connector, takes a single wire connector.

So what kind of car is it? Does it have an electric fan? If it does, and there's nothing hooked to that fan switch, then the fan isn't coming on when it's supposed to, and you need to find the wire and hook it up.

I'll take what's behind Door #2 - the detonation sensor. One of us is gonna win the big one! The older KS has that big, funky, cone-shaped connector.

To make sure, measure the diameter of the sensor. How big around is it? Does it mount in the head or down low in the block?

I'm guessing you have either a Haynes or Chilton... you need the "big guy", from http://www.helminc.com . You can find them sometimes on eBay... they're used, and some are beat up, but they're usually cheaper.

id say it could be a heat riser valve or maybe its called something else, mne was flapping in the breeze on my 86 i just took it off im pretty certain it just helps the engie warm up faster by dirverting air up by the valves

Passenger side near the plugs is a fan switch.

I believe that the temp switch is on the drivers side screwed into the block with a single green wire going to it.

The knock sensor should be located on the drivers side lower portion of the block near the oil filter. I had a couple 80s motors and this is where they are.
