Air Temp Sensor?
Air Temp Sensor?
I built a custom ram air for my 88 camaro 2.8 V6. It has helped the power greatly and makes it so much more fun to drive. #1 Anyways, i ended up having to change out the MAF because i was pulling a code. I began driving the car again and runs great unless it is really hot out (i live in texas), then the car seems to loose power, mainly when im coming to a stop. not yet stopped but not pressing on gas. #2 When im driving on the highway my SES light comes on then goes off. i have pulled a code 24 i think it was. could that SES light be coming on because of the ram air? am i just gonna have to get over it.
No, the SES light is comming on because you removed your MAF sensor. Your car does not have an MAT sensor, that's a sensor which is used most often by Pontiacs in particular (however all f-bodies as far as I know used MAF). MAT is used in combination with VSS sensors to determine the amount of air / fuel to send to the motor. Obviously there's more, the MAP, O2, and TPS.
But in the f-body, the MAF serves to replace the VSS and MAT for fuel purposes. Other cars still have the VSS, but only for telling the speedo how fast the car is going.
In any case, the MAF sensor is used to determine the temperature and amount of air going into the engine. This is a very important sensor to tell the motor how much fuel to deliver to the cyls. Without this, the computer has to rely soley on the TPS and the O2 sensor. Why did you remove it? Was it because it was broken? If so, you'll want to replace it.. or find a way to utilize it.. it's an important piece for the computer.

It was showing broken through the codes so i got a new one exactly like what was on there and i havent had any problems with it. i was told that the sensor in my airbox was throwing my SES i though that was the air temp sensor. either way i think that the sensor on the air box is what is wrong. what is it called and how would it effect my car?
Specifically, the one on your system is called a MASS AIR FLOW sensor. It measures both the volume of air, and the temperature of the air passing through the intake.
Like I said, if this is bad, then the computer relies soley on the throttle position sensor, and the Oxygen sensor. That means that your car isn't going to run anywhere near the performance it should. And at ANY temperature change from I guess what would be room temperature.. your car is not going to run correctly. It will either run RICH, or LEAN.
Having it disconnected is probably better than leaving it connected. At least that way you know your car isn't running lean. (which can burn pistons).

so your telling me is that the sensor in my airbox is effecting the MAF that isnt in the airbox? even though the MAF is brand new it wont work correctly? so i should unhook the MAF and then do what to fix it? or just unhook the sensor in the airbox?
No no.. hehe.. I think we're both getting confused.
The MAF sensor should be attached to the end of your throttle body (I believe, it's been a while).
It's in-line with your throttle body and air box.
I was under the impression that you had removed it.
What codes is your computer shooting off?
Do you know how to check the codes?
You stick a paper clip in the A and B terminal of your diagnostic port of your ECM. You put it in POWER ON mode, but do not start the car. The computer will flash code 12 three times, then any other codes, and then flash code 12 again three times.
You will want to find out what codes it's flashing between the CODE 12 flashes.
It's a bit hard to explain, I suggest getting one of those $12 dollar Chilton's or Hayes (I prefer Hayes) manuals from Discount Auto Parts, or Bennet, or Super Trak & Auto, or whatever you have where you live.
Under EMISSIONS CONTROL it will tell you how to diagnose your computer problems.

yes all that you just said was correct but i have done the code reading and it shows that the sensor on my airbox is causeing the SES. what im trying to figure out is if it is from the custom ram air, because it only comes on once and a while then goes off. the other question was what would be making my car start to die when i start to slow down to stop. it is fine while driving and once stopped but when im slowing down it starts to die, like im losing power. i have new spark plug wires and dist cap.

Have you replaced your oxygen sensor lately? If so, that could very well be hte problem. Our computers are VERY picky when it comes to the type of O2 sensor.. the only ones that REALLY work are the BOSCH, and AC Delco sensors.
Other than that, you probably have major carbon buildup.. I would go with a GOOD fuel injection system flush.. not that cheap STP crap, but some hard core stuff.
