How long can I leave antifreeze in my oil pan?

I did an intake swap about a week ago and the antifreeze that went into the engine is still there. Can i leave it there till i get a chance to change the oil. or will it damage stuff. Thanks.

I don't see why you shouldn't change it ASAP. It only takes a small percentage of water in oil to cause significant damage. As a good rule of thumb, anytime you expose engine internals (e.g. - intake manifold swap, valve stem seals, etc.) change the oil. It probably won't hurt anything, but it's not worth the risk.

Remove it immediately.

Coolant is very corrosive to bearings.

I had a 2.8 that had an intake leak and the customer didn't want to fix it so he gave us the truck.....it sat for 2 weeks with coolant still in the oil.

I pulled the engine and the whole inside of the engine was rusted. Rockers, pushrods, etc.

The bearings were all wasted and had actually rotated a crank bearing in the block.

Keep in mind that the engine ran fine and didn't knock until it was run with water in the oil. It was only run until the temp started to go up. Then it was towed to my shop.

I'm not saying this will happen in all instances...its just food for thought.

I would change the oil ASAP.

change it, don't drive anymore. It will kill your engine.

The mixture sitting at the bottom will develop moisture and start the rust process.

I would put new oil in it, start it and let it warm up...then park it for the winter.

Even if you do not run the car, the water will settle on top of the oil. Maybe just enough to hit the crank. Can you say rust ball!

The GM Tech down the street said let it sit a littel cause teh antifreeze is heavier then the water and when i pull the plug the water will come out first.

Still, either way, when that plug is pulled, the oil and antifreeze are going to come out. C'mon man, do the oil change!

It doesn't matter to "let it sit for a little" the water will seperate overnight.

All we are trying to say is that letting the water stay in there any amount of time is too long, period.

You are increasing the chances of rust and bearing failure every day you leave it in there.

You asked for our advice, you got it.

The important thing is to get the water out of the crankcase.

I would start it and circulate the good oil as soon as I could.
