Alternator Spacer

Ok. I've got my 84 Z28 HO... The problem is my stupid alternator keeps squealing on cold mornings no matter what I do. It gets to the point where the belt snaps if I let it go too long. No matter how tight or loose the damn thing is, it squeals.

Now. Looking in the shop manual, there appears to be a spacer on the pivot bolt for the alternator. I don't have that. Can someone with a similar year car look at theirs and see if they have it.

If you do have it, please measure it for me so I can make an appropriate substitute. Pictures would be nice also.
Thanx in advance.

make it easy on yourself go to a salvage yard and get the pulley and needed spacer because if yours is missing someone was working on it before you and screwed it up

I have a 83, same thing... no spacer.

Do your belts line up? If so, then that's not the problem. You may need an alternator, or it might be the AIR pump which is right below the alt. Put a piece of heater hose in your ear and probe around with the other end to find exactly where teh noise is coming from.

The belts look like they may be off a little bit.

I found the part through GM.. A brand new one costs $3.15 so I'm getting that. I figure worst case, I'm out 3 bucks but I have the right spacer.
Thanx Guys.

That's interesting. My HO motor has never had one, and everything lines up just fine. There's not even a place to put a spacer.

I wonder if you have the right pulleys on the crank and water pump.

I'm going by a picture in the Helm's shop manual for 84 camaros. (page 6d-15 if you happen to have it)
The picture is for VIN's 7 & H, I know our's is G but externally there shouldn't be any difference. Plus it's the only picture there that matches the alternator setup I have.

There's the upper bracket which goes over the top and is the swing area.
The the lower bracket is just a small finger like plate that sits in front of the Alternator.
When you put the pivot bolt in, if you tighten it down, it tends to bend the lower bracket towards the block which is what I'm thinking is causing my problem. Misaligning the pulleys when it's tightened.

There is nothing stopping the alternator from being pushed back towards the block when the pivot bolt is tightened.

Worst case, I haven't fixed the problem but I'm only out 3 bucks. LOL

Yeah, there should be a little bearing sleeve that goes in there.

Without that, It wont Line Up properly.

This is the Case For All GM alternators, I think these guys Thought You meant the adjustment Bolt On top

But yeah, looks like You Nailed the Problem Wolf.

Oh that...

Yes, I definitely do have that one. It has a little tab on it that fastens to the back of the alt. There is also supposed to be a little bracket for the AIR valve that goes behind it; you'll need to put a flat washer or something back there.

Heh, imagine that. Two weeks ago, the bolt that my alternator pivots on broke (musta overtorqued it.. don't know my own strength). Think I remember hearing that spacer drop off about midnight on my way down the interstate. Needless to say, it's gone forever. I just cut a piece of pipe to fit in there and it is working just fine. If only I could remember how long it was.....I know I wrote that somewhere. 3 5/8" comes to mind for some reason, but wouldn't bet money on it.

Yup! Spacer is needed! You got that right!

Another suggestion to help the V-belt situation, is what I did, I got the ribbed belt (Like a serpentine, but same routing as the V-belt) pulleys from an 85, or 86 305 car. I didn't have any alignment problems, but I had a squealing problem, and the belt fixed it! I got mine from a Grand Prix, or something like that out of a junkyard for like $20. You may want to try this if you have any further problems!

Working on:
'84 Z28 LG4 305
Added dual elec fans.
145 MPH IROC Speedo
Building 430 HP 350
using primarily GMPP parts.
Block is in shop!

Awaiting results from all 8 ASE tests.

Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!

Mine is missing that spacer as well, previous owner used a spark plug socket in it's place, but that is still a little short.
I guess I'll be heading to the dealer, since it's only $3 bux.
