I think the intake valve comes very close to the cylinder wall on any cam that has more than about .45 lift.

a lot of 305 heads have smaller chambers than 350 heads. so the compression would be higher, but 305 heads don't flow very well. there is also the problem of the valve hitting the deck surface with very much cam lift.

Hey ede, I think you didn't read the post too well. With the 350 heads, (76ccs) the compression ratio would be too low. The 305 heads, (58cc) would be what you need. You wont get enough power, and produce too much emisions, if you have testing.

Compression will probably be about 7.x:1 because of the large combustion chambers. It would be good if you had a blower on the engine with lots of boost.

Depending on cam lift, the valves may hit the block. 2.02/1.6 valves will definately not work with the 305's small bore and the stock 1.95/1.5's are close.

im planning on building the motor stock nothing fancy. from the sound of it i should just get a 350 shortblock to work with. im trying to rebuild the 64 f100 im going to put it in for as little $ as i can so a blower is totaly out of the question. thanks for the help

I believe the heads you have will work on the 305 no problem. you cannot run a 2.02 head on a 350 because the valves will not clear the cylinder walls but I believe the L98 heads have a 1.88 intake and will clear. I also believe those heads have a 58cc chamber, not 72cc but verify my information before you do anything. mic your cylinders and you can find out if they are bored or not. If it has pistons in it, they should be stamped .030 somewhere on the face.

the iron L98 heads have 64 cc combustion chambers

Kyle is thinking of the aluminum L98 heads with 58 cc combustion chambers

most 305 heads are between 55 and 58 ccs

if you bolted on l98 iron heads to a 305 it would be a dog

no offense, but 2.20 valves WILL clear on a 350. what do you think those camel hump heads came on? 350's and 327's both same bore. on a 305 i dont know.
