Watch out for those open Fre-Flo that u can get for like $20. True they flow more, but when the engine sucks in that much air it will take the foam with it in chunks. I would return mine if i could find the receipt....

I have a dual snorkel with a K/N filter. It's first rate.

IMHO the dual snorkel is the way to go. The restriction is negligible, and you get cold air instead of hot underhood air. THe HO setup should be worth about 5 HP or more over an open element for that reason. I'm still running my HO one on my 400, it dyno'd 283 HP & 373 ft/lbs at the wheels with the air cleaner installed and operating, so it will definitely do enough air for a 305.

There was an article written on the HO Camaro conversion with the ZZ4 that did a test with the dual snorkel air cleaner. By just taking the lid off of the dual snorkel air cleaner the car picked up almost 5 tenths in the quarter mile. The stock dual snorkel is very restrictive compared to an open element.

Wow... I do have mine on a 1" spacer on top of the carb, I forgot to mention that, it made a significant difference. Couldn't say if it was .5 sec though, that's HUGE!!
BTW this is the primary problem with drop-base air cleaners. It doesn't matter how tall the filter medium is if all the air has to pass through what is basically a slit because the lid is so close to the top of the carb.

If you have the functional 'Ram-air' option on your T/A I'd keep the dual snorkel. Lots of people have opted it out but I'm going to attempt to hook the ram-air up to a drop base air-cleaner on my Holley and possibly just block off the rest of the aircleaner (play with it and see what works). I've always liked the functional power buldge hood, kind of cool how they thought it through with the 140 deg. metal temp switch inline with the oil pressure switch, and vaccum switch...don't know how it will react with the choke heater being disconnect though.
Anyway, you can test and try. Air cleaners are $20 from Summit and if it does't do anything scrap it which isn't as much as a loss as a $60 air foil

I would sort of base it around what you have:
If you have a pretty much stock 305 and a stock hood, I'd go with a K&N, Dual snorkel setup, and K&N Stubstack. If you need extra flow, turn the top of the air cleaner cap upside down, it'll give you a LITTLE more flow.
If you have or can get a cowl induction hood, I'd go with a 4" cleaner, 1" carb spacer, stubstack, K&N filter. The open element will work fine without the cowl hood, but you'll pull MUCH more cool air with either a cowl hood or raise the rear of the hood (which isn't much to look at, but is effective). Hope this helps
