I would logically assume that the best thing you could probably do is to dismantle the master cylinder reservoir, drain all the fluid out of it and put fresh brake fluid into it.
I'm still learning about this stuff at the time being, though... so it might be wise to hear the suggestions of some of the other people here before doing anything.

In the old days, people used to put brake fluid in everything (clutch, brakes, and power steering). But with this new stuff, I'm not sure. Is it (the brakes working alright? If you don't fel good about it, just like the man says, flush it out.
By the way, I've done things dumber than that before (while we're being all honest here).

Drain the brake system now, before you damage seals and hoses. Losing your brakes is not a fun episode.
Start by emptying all the fluid from the MC reservior, then remove the lines from the MC and bench bleed it. If you're lucky, you'll get all the oil out of there before it has a chance to damage the MC seals. If not, you'll lose your MC.
How long ago did the error occur?

I agree with Vader and in addition to bleeding the MC, flush out the brake lines and brake calipers as well. Otherwise it will eat the seals up.

Dude, you need to get that ps fluid out. I completely agree with Vader and Trickster. What you did was a mistake, not flushing all the fluid out would be the stupid thing.

Hi all, I am really stupid and my name is... oh wait wrong meeting.
As previously stated flush, but, how long ago and how much was put in. If you were really low and put a good amount in, you're looking at a full flush and, depending how long ago, replacement of the rubber lines to the calipers. I'm paranoid in my brake work!

None of what has been mentioned so far is all that hard. What you need to keep in mind is, how hard and how much will it cost if I don't do this? This is your brakes you are talking about here.
Like somebody already said, what you did was a mistakce, not correcting it would be stupid.
(sorry, just looked it up, NotPlayn said it)

What if you put brake fluid in your powersteering? I know it's not the right thing to do but just wondering if it would cause a problem the way powersteering fluid in place of brake fluid would.

stock replacement calipers for all 4 corners of my car cost $450 plus $120?? for steel braided lines.. drums could be more or less.. i too have made mistakes.. like putting paint stripper in a cardboard box and putting it under the car and later have a neighbor run into my house and tell me my car was on fire..

My most notable moments when I was young:1. Putting gas in a drink cup to pour into an out-of-gas carb and realizing it was styrofoam right about when the bottom fell out of it covering the engine with gas.
2. Getting in a hurry on a simple oil change and seeing the red color of the oil of the last quart that was trans fluid.
3. Realizing that a bad plug wire can cause a one-cylinder miss under load for months and months and being so mad that I tied it on the rear view mirror and drove around with it for years as a reminder.

Once upon a time, when I worked at Autozone... I was changing a battery for the old lady and this nice little Japanese girl comes up to me and says.
"I think I did something bad." Turns out she poured an entire gallon of windshield washer fluid in her crankcase.
Ignorant is when you didn't know. Stupid is when you did know but did it anyways. All is forgiven.

I was in a rush to fix my T-bird one day and used Vacuum line for fuel line. Not so good consiquences. Ended up smelling like gas for 2 days.
On said T-bird I replaced the headgaskets and decided to not mill the heads to save money, well lets just say I had to take it apart again.

Exactly. That's what happens when you don't think about the problem at hand, you think about reaping the benefits and you cut corners to get there. But hey, we've all been there whether you want to admit it or not.

lol thats a funny oops. i know a guy workin on a generator, checks the diesel fuel level, looks low so he puts in about 10 gallons, comes back an hour later and its even worse. so thinking nothing of it, he goes back and starts filling up the gas tank again when somebody points out "you know, thats where you put the hydraulic oil". cost over 10,000 buks to fix that little oops (taxpayer dollars).
