engine will not idle down inbetween gear changes!!!!!

I have a 1992 and when I change gears or come to a red light the throttle is very slow to come back to a regular idle. It hangs up at about 1500 rpms, after 10 or so seconds it will finally start to slowly come back to around 750 rpms. Anyone have any suggestions???????

I had this trouble with my 90 Formula, 5.0TPI, 5 speed. Have you tried reving the engine to get it to drop back down to idle? It could be the bushings in your throttle body. I eventually had to replace the whole throttle body. You might need a new TB, but hopefully not. See if a quick rev with fix it.

My car does the same thing, but only for about 1-3 seconds. However mine only does it when the car is MOVING. If I'm sitting still, the idle adjusts much quicker.

Since the car started acting this way after I installed my open air filter, I figured the idle stays high due to the increase of air getting into the engine.

If you've never checked out your engine..take a look at your throttle cable and linkage, fuel pressure (not enough fuel), and the IAC motor. These parts would create a condition where you are getting too much air and the engine is trying to compensate with a high idle in order to get the proper mixture. Just my $.02

I doubt this has to do with any kind of bind since it seems to be common, even across TPI/TBI. Just a WAG, but i'll bet it's your IAC keeping your idle speed high between gear changes to lessen the shock loading of re-accelerating the flywheel after the shift.
But by all means, do make sure that nothing is binding. Easy enough to do, just take off your air cleaner9for teh TBI guy, and watch the throttle linkage while you work the pedal. If you see it lag when you let ot go, you know you've found a problem.

Ok, so I'll be the odd one out. I'm not even going to blame the throttle cable or the TB ... I think you may need to look at your clutch. If the clutch plate is not releasing completely during your shift, the transmission drag will try to keep the engine revs up. This used to happen to me years ago on an old 2nd gen of mine until I got the clutch adjusted correctly.
