A chip for an LG4--any good?

I'm not sure where this post belongs, so if it's not here, sorry. I saw Next Gen parts has aftermarket PROMs for lg4's. Since these motors still have carburetors and computer control of the engine is fairly limited, do these chips actually do any good? Does anyone have one on their LG4? Mine is stock except for Flowmaster exhaust and a K&N air filter.

Definetly not worth the money. If it was free, maybe I'd bother to put it in. The computer has little control over the engine... it controls the primary fuel jetting and timing.

I didn't get mine from Next Gen (can't even remember the name right now), and haven't done back-to-back comparisons with the stock chip. But, I do know that I passed emissions testing "fast pass" (emissions so low I didn't have to go through the full dyno test) when it had 123k miles on it, I average 19 mpg commuting and 26 on highway w/o functioning TCC, and at the track I'm asked why my LG4 outruns their L69's. Turned over 139k yesterday, got 21.4 mpg on the last fill-up.

Is it the chip? Don't know. Maybe it's the AMSOIL...

Gotta be The asmoil!

Seriously Tho Five7, Whats your Initial timing set to ?

What exhuast manifolds/Ypie Do you have ?

What air cleaner/induction setup do you have?

Those things, along with the engine being in good condition, properly gapped plugs, a strong ignition ( your coil ) and other small things could easily account for your outrunning L69's and Low emissions

Much more likely than the chip! )

but duh, you knew that )

Oh yeah, and If you read this, Email me a place where I can order asmoil Lubes, I Want to run it In my tranny and rear end, And I cant find it!

Eric,

Swap in some secondary metering rods (fifteen minute job tops). I used AH rods with a G hanger--this combo (Check the Carb section for more combinations) will do more for a carbed car than a chip. Tweak the air valve tension (see the tech articles), and advance the timing and you'll see a difference that will bring a smile to your face. If you can find one, buy a dual snorkel, and regardless, stick a KN filter in.

Don't bother with the chip. Before the chip my LG4 was slow. After the chip, guess what? It's still slow! Luckily it was free, but if I were you I'd save my money and just advnce the timing you'd get the same results and wouldn't have to spend a dime, except for the cost of 93 octane gas all the time.

I agree with Blade. First the eprom controls very little - basically just timing nothing else...it still a carb and it works like all other carbs to my knowledge. Second, these "over the counter" eproms generally only add a few degrees of timing to the mid range of your spark table...big deal.

Blade and I have both looked at a lot of these "over the counter" eproms for a variety of cars and NONE have impressed me. The only "formula" eprom that did impress was Ed Wright from Fastchips.

Still I think burning your own eprom is the best solution. The problem is that there really is very little information on the "compu-carb", so this isn't really an answer either.

Advance your timing a few degrees; it basically does what most of these "over the counter" eproms promise to do.
