Electric water pump worth the trouble?

I was thinking about getting one. I have heard of 10 hp gains at the top end and increased cooling capacity. I have also heard that they cant cool as well for a street driven car and are unreliable. What do you guys think? Anyone have one? I drive my car daily.

Is it worth the money? What is a good brand?

Thanks, Doug

for the street i don't think i'd use one. for racing it allows you to run the pump to cool the engine without running the engine.

Agreed. And for the price of the high end electric pumps for street use, You could spend less money to get 10 HP. Electric motors will all eventually break down or sieze up.

Lets say you drive your car at least 2 hours a day 7 days a week. In 5 years you'll have over 3500 hours on the electric motor (minimum). Many electric motors like that are only rated for 2000-3000 hours life expectancy.

Think of the motor for your heater fan. When they start to howl and squeel, they're worn out. Those are cheaper to replace than a water pump.

The best thing to do for a street car is invest in an aluminum belt driven water pump. The Moroso claims 7 HP increase and the Edelbrock one clains to flow 20% more than stock.

My race car uses an aluminum pump however I use an electric motor to drive it but then it's not street legal either.

Increased cooling capacity? Never.
A electric pump will never outflow a mech pump no matter what. See this comparision with a cheap($69) Stewart pump compared to others.

Since nothing in your sig says anything about your driveline I'd say

#1 Get a good torque converter. You'll notice more of an improvement than you will with a water pump.

#2 Gears. Something around 3.73 will wake it up also.

If it was for my weekend only racer, of course I would slap one of those pricey puppies to the front of my engine, but if you do want to use it on a daily driver....take it from experience, buy a 3 core aluminum rad with a powerful fan cause those electric water pumps need ALL the help they can get when the heat kicks it up to about 80 degrees. and god forbid if it ever hit 90 or above!
