car stumbles
car stumbles
ok its been a while. I started my car and it starts out ok then idle down and it sputters but stays runing. when i try to drive it it wants to die out. I will push the pedal to the floor, almost dies, then after a second it revs up. i replaced the plugs and wires, checked the cap and rotor there ok. what could it be? the computer doesnt trip any codes. Could there be something wrong with the computer or dist. I dont think its the carb b/c it was rebuilt last summer. I put good fuel it. any help is appreciated.

It's the carb. Failure to feed gas at a critical moment.

does it do it only when it's cold? is it electrically choked? you might wanna see if your choke is on when the engine is cold..
if it does it when it's hot i would say incorrect carb tuning, or if it's sat for awhile maybe the float sunk?
couple of ideas for ya..

Possibly a waste, who knows. Check for vacuum leaks before you zero in on the carb, since too much air = not enough gas. Results can be similar.

yea...RD is right..before you go zeroing in on your carb, make sure all the basics are done first. How does the rotor and cap look? it could be your pick-up coil going bad. The pickup coil is located on the base of your distributer. Sometimes those go slowly out. Check your ignition module, go get it checked for free, also at the same time, get your ignition coil checked as well. Vacuum leaks, intake mani leak, timing, even slap your computer a couple of times...its worked before!!

I repaced the plugs and wires. the cap/rotor looked ok to me. what exaclty is the ignition module? were can i get it checked for free? and is the ignition coil the box on top of the dist.? I will try hitting the computer. thanks again for the help.

You say you have no codes. What is that based on? Did you do a diagnostic or relying on the SES light. I had an 85 LG4 that the mileage went to crap. My SES light was out. When I put the Auto X-Ray on it I found I had a bad coolant temp sensor. Code 13 or 15, I can't remember.
My coolant temp sensor was reading a constant -4 degrees which made my car always enrich the fuel mixture thinking the car was cold. Additionally it wouldn't go into closed loop or get TCC lockup.
11 dollars later, closed loop, TCC lockup, and one vacuum hose that came loose and my mileage almost doubled.
Don't trust the SES light. Turn the key on without starting it and notice if you have a SES light at all.
Only reason I mention this is my symptons sounded a bit similar to yours.
