VATS Issues, I suppose?
I have a stock 92 RS v8 5L Camaro, with... alot of problems. lol
I have just recently replaced the battery, alternator, AND starter. So today when I went to go start my car... I knew it wasn't any of them. lol
I put my key in, and the Security light went on for about 2 seconds, then disappeared; as normal. I then went to start the car totally, and there was this awful "CRANK CRANK CRANK" noise. Sounded like the gears stuttering or something, but it wouldn't turn over.
I then looked at the dash again, and noticed that the Security light came back on. I then waited about 2 or 3 more seconds, and it turned off. Attempted again, and still nothing.
I can only think of it to be VATS. What would you think?

Doesn't sound like a VATS deal to me. Sounds like a bad battery cable, starter, or something of that nature. Can you try jumping the starter? Short the main top terminal at the starter to the smaller S terminal there with a screwdriver. Careful with this, big current if you short the screwdriver out, but the starter should turn the engine over normally if the battery, cables, and starter are ok. If so, maybe a bad switch.

Ok, thanks for the help - but could you say that in some laments terms for me? Like step by step? I'm real... dumb when it comes to car stuff. lol

I agree with Tom3 about it not being a VATS problem. When you say you turned the key and got this terrible "CRANK", "CRANK" sound. Could you be a little more specific about that noise. Is this the first time that you have cranked the car since replacing those parts that you have mentioned. It also doesn't matter that you just replaced the starter, it could have been defective from the box especially if it was a remanufactured one.

No, it's been working ever since I had it installed. Perfectly as well. Yet, I leave for 4 days, and now it doesn't want to start.
The sound is kind of like a gear grinding noise. All the in-dash LEDs flicker and such as well. Battery charge shows as being fine though.

The grinding noise is the starter trying to engage the flywheel and not doing very well at it. What kind of starter did you put on there?

Some remanufactored thing from Pep Boys... *looks for receipt*
Hmmm... doesn't say what brand. Well, it had done this once, and I thought it was the alternator, so after I replaced that the problem went away. Then the starter went out and I replaced that.
What do you think?

The security light always comes on, when you try to start the car. Well correct me if I'm wrong but VATS wouldn't even allow you to crank the motor. If your car is cranking make sure you're getting fuel and a spark to the motor. If you have these things, then make sure your battery is fresh. If it still wont start, wtf did you do? lol

My friend who helps me with the car says that tomorrow we are going to replace the battery cables and something about a new ground for it? And hopefully that should work. lol
Maybe I should get some new spark plugs as well? Since I doubt they have been changed... lol

Under some circumstances the VATS system would allow you to crank the car but not start it due to the fuel injectors. These are rare and the security light would stay lit.

Ok, well. I have temp. fixed the problem
We went out to show my friend what sound it was making, but then noticed... hmm... battery = dead. lol
We took that out and got a refund and went and got some cheap battery and a trickle charger. We installed all of it and now it starts up great. VATS gave me a slight problem (no crank, click, and light still on) for about 5 min, but then noticed that the chip in my key was slightly off-alignment. I pushed it back, waited 5 min, and then the car started up great. With a higher than I ever saw charge (like 15-16).
Took the car out for a little joy ride (burn outs in the industrial parking lots, hehe) and now everything works great. And just incase the battery gives me any more trouble, I just plug in the charger and wait a while.
So, that is the quick fix for now. At least until I get the car re-wired.
