Getting oil dipstick tube out

I have done a search for this but i couldnt find anything related to my certain problem. The guy who had the car before me for some strange reason believed it was alright to cut the dipstick tube near the block as close as he could. Saved weight? but i there was enough i pulled and twisted and a piece about an inch or so long came out it was clean cut on the bottom (the portion in the block) you can see there is still a portion of tube in the hole. is my only solution taking the oil pan off and trying to tap it out. or is this impossible? any suggestions greatly appreciated

Ryan

Find a bolt that fits the hole and knock the piece down and into the oil pan. It cannot get sucked up by the screen it is too large.

disregard my last post. I reread and see it is an earloer block. There is a flared sleeve in the block that drops in before the dipstick goes in. This may be the piece you see. Late model blocks do not have this extension. Post a pic. You may be in good shape already.

Exactly. I've had a couple of the older blocks with the two-piece setup. It's no fun when the upper snaps off and the lower is seized/rusted in place.

That looks like the sleeve I was referring to. Pop in the new dipstick and you will be ok.

There are lots of choices. Lokar makes some nice dipsticks for a pre 80 block. I bought a braided steel, with billet handle from them for about $40. Chromies , and oem type are all out there. I ordered a plain Jane dipstick from my local chevy dealer for the last motor I assembled. Easy to find. Aftermarket stuff usually comes with tube.
