Why did that truck out run me?????
OK, on the way home tonight my buddy (who has a 91 4-wheel drive Chevy 1500) passes me. So I tried to pull around him. Now, he just put a 350 in to replace the factoy 4.3. Sad thing is, I not only didn't pull around him, but he might have been able to leave me in a longer straight. I think (in fact, I know) that the tune up made my car worse. Is this possible? And how can I get back my bragging rights????? Thanks.

Well if your stock you have 170 hp. If he is stock his 350 probably has @ 225. He is carrying a little more weight.
Have you beat him before?
What did you do on the tune up? Change timing?

My buddys bone stock L03 1992 RS ran a 17.8 which would explain why you got beat. My G20 would more than likely would hand it, to you too.

I had the guy do plugs, plug wires, timing and he changed the distributer.... used a used one. He also used cheap wires. I think the timing is more off now than before. I wonder if a 91 RS 5-speed with a L98 B2L 5.7 Liter TPI from an 90 I-ROC would beat it?

Seriously, why would you wonder whats wrong if you know the timing is off. Go buy a timing light, and set it to 6 degrees BTDC with the tan wire disconnected by the passenger side strut tower.

What is a BTDC? Where can I get a timing light? I'll go look for the tan wire now. Thanks. I was thinking I was going to have to have a mechanic do it.

A few side notes here, 4.3L full size trucks came with a few different gear options 3.73's are most common but you will find some with 4.10's from the factory as part of a tow package. Seems stupid to me to have that option on a 4.3L a 350 would be all the tow package you need. I had one setup with a TP swaped in a 305 kept it TBI, the truck ran awsome too bad my ex has it now.
3.42's a full EXH system and you should be able to take that truck.

I plan to buy another car anyway. It is on sale in the for sale section. The RS 5.7 TPI 5-speed with the 3.27 pos rear end. His truck is a 5-speed and it has the 4.10 because it was a 4.3 before. He decided to V-8 it a couple of weeks ago.
BTW, how do you like your headers? And how much were they?

Yeah, what he said. That would have been a scary truck if mine were a TPI 350, huh?

Not all 4.3s came with low gears. My '89 came with a 5spd and 3.08s. Got great mileage, but not much in the power department. Switched to 4.10s and what a difference. Beats most 350 trucks pretty good now.
lol, thats why... 305cid in your car, 350 cid in his... after i did the 350 swap in my car and changed out the rearend, it got FAST, so i understand your loss... but ive seen LO3's whup up on some 350's though

I got the timing set today. That should help next time. It turns out the 350 he put in is an Intercepter (at least the manifold and heads). That could explain it to a degree..... I was thinking about putting a 3.40 or so in the one I hope to get. It is a 350 5-speed. It now has the 3.27 pos.

Oh. I thought that it was a performance package. Like the one for Camaros.

There wasn't a "performance package" for the Camaro police cars either. They came with the same engine as any other equivalently optioned 305 or 350. Nothing special.
Don't get sucked in by buzzwords.... or next thing you know, somebody will have you paying extra for their "Vortec rocker arms" or "375 HP 327 cam" or something else worthless and undistinguished like that.

I won't. I ussually do alot of research b4 I buy anything personally. What do you think about aftermarket vortec heads on a third gen? I was thinking about it. They aren't terribly expensive and make pretty good power.

There ok, better then stock manifolds. I got them a few years ago for the bird, I think they were $80. They Y pipe is the expensive piece if you were to use the FT Y it's around $130 just for it, I had my Y's custom made.
