I've searched and it looks like permatex sealant with teflon is the popular choice for sealing head bolts. The problem is, I'm finding that they make a few different types of thread sealant. I have a tube of "Thread sealant w/ teflon" 14AR (80631) and type 2 already, and have seen "High performance thread sealant" (part 25117 and 56521 depending on container size) and "high temperature thread sealant" (59214 and 59235). Should I use one of the sealants that I have, or buy one of the others? Thanks.

 

Why are you sealing head bolts? What motor are you building?

 

because they thread into the water jacket. I'm working on an LG4 305.

 

Your right as I think of it. I've built lots of motors and never sealed head bolts before, though. Just globbed the threads with STP and thrown them in. Never seen any probs either. Just lucky, I suppose. Guess I'd better think of that from now on, huh?

I'm putting one together right now, I used red permatex, seems to work fine.

 

Built many motors using Permatex #2. No problems. But in the last few years I've switched to the Permatex thread sealant with teflon.. Small tube, white goo. .Not sure of the # but have had no problems with it either.

Learned the hard way back in 86 that the bolts had to be sealed. Had water in the oil of my 396 and couldnt figure out where it was coming from.. Sealed the bolts no more problem.

 

any non hardening sealer will work, like you said teflon sealer is popular
