Finally got engine back togegher, need help getting it to start
Ok, well i just got her back together and have a few questions. At first it wasnt sparking but i just had the wires crossed, and got that fixed, now it is popping through the carb, but i havent checked the timing yet. Another thing, i have a fuel pressure regulator and gauge hooked up. When i am turning the engine over, the guage reads zero. I have even adjusted the regulator and still zero. Is this normal? I didnt know if i will only get a reading when the car is running or not, but i pulled one of the plugs and it was completey dry.

If it's popping through the carb then you're getting fuel and spark, but not at the right time. Fiddle with the distributor and see if you cant get it approximately right. I know that I just pump gas on mine, throttle it real hard, and turn the key and see how easy it is to get started, if at all. You'll be able to tell by that how close you are to the "proper" timing".

Well i got it to start, i had the distributor 180 degrees off. But i have encountered another problem, i let it idle for a second, then i looked and oil had been slung everywhere all over the firewall area. it looks like it is either coming from the distributor hole or the end of the intake manifold. I didnt have the distributor real tight because i was messing with the timing, is it possible that oil could have snuke through there?

do you have an oil sending unit screwed in at the back of the block?

there is another by the distributor on the block, it should be plugged off, since you have the one by the filter.
If you look head on at the distributor, its on the right side, driver, down on the block.

Also check to see if the distributor is fully seated, ive run mine loose many times, and never had oil come out.

It curves around it? Is this it? Please tell me it is, i took that cap off thinking it would get in the way of the new manifold

That would be it sir. Go to a parts store, and find one that is smaller or, find a angled fitting then cap it off. Ill try to find a pic for ya.
Just reread what you typed, it should clear the intake but if it dont, do the above.

I'm having a similar problem, not the oil, but not getting it started, I just got my engine back together also but im having problems getting it started.
You said your distributor was a 180*'s off, my vacuum advance is on the passenger side, would that mean i would turn it so its on the driver side?

easy way to get tdc in #1 is to stuff a plasit baggy in the #1 spark plug hole and turn the motor until it pops out. line the mark up to 0. Take your distributor witht he cap on and mark the casing at the bottom where #1 would be and take the cap back off. Drop the distributor in pointing at the mark you mad. You may have to get a long screwdriver and tinker with the oil pump shaft position to get it to seat right.

Is it popping through the carb or backfiring? This is how i could tell that mine was off. Also first i would verify that you are getting spark and fuel. Then check the timing. What i mean by 180 degrees off, i took the cap off the dist. pulled it out and then rotated it 180 degrees then re cap it and your set.
