Car dies when stopped

So here is the story: It is a 89 firebird formula, I got it about a week ago. It ran fine when I got it (actually it ran fine about 6 hours ago), but on my way home today the damn thing kept dying.
It starts fine, but everytime I stop at a light it dies, any time I let it idle for even a little while it dies. and I have to wait 30 seconds or so before it will start again. The service engine light it also on.

Any ideas?

T.

If your car is an auto, check that the torgue converter lock up is disengaing. To test you need to drive the car on the highway at cruising speed, engine at normal operating temperature and press the brake pedal lightly. You should notice the engine rpms increase. If not then the TLC is not releasing. If when you come to a stop if the engine starts to dry then put the tranny into netural.

I had the same problem with my car. It turned out to be the MAF.

I'll go out on a limb and say it could be your EGR valve sticking open. During mid throttle driving the EGR will open, but is suppose to be closed during either WOT or idle. If it isn't closing when you're coming to a stop it can cause a rough idle, or no idle at all and stall the engine. An improperly functioning EGR will cause your check engine light to come on ( i forgot which code # it is).
