How to tune a carbed engine...?
Well, the thing thats nagging me is how do those magazine guys tune their engines.. I'm not talking about jetting and timing, I mean how do they tell what to do?
How can you tell on a carbed engine like " Oh yeah, a #2 bigger jet and 4 degrees more timing will give us 20 more horsepower...."???
Do they use wideband O2 sensors, or just read the plugs and listen for knock?

they stick an O2 in the tail pipe and hook it up to an A/F meter to tell how to tune it. Magazines usually have ties with dyno shops so they prob dyno it after a change, or they might do some math calcs.

I would think they go to a dragstrip, make sure they can drive it very consistantly, then do one change, note the speed dif, then either go in that direction, or away from it (if it makes it faster or slower.)
and/or O2 sensors of course...
also reading the plugs is for the real old school guys.... ie the ones using carbs instead of a wideband O2 sensor and fuel injection

It is a tried and true "old school method".
I still trust my senses more than a damned cpu anyways on my tpi. On my carbed cars, all of the 5 senses but taste go into tuning them, how they sound (after years, you know the sound of a healthy motor, half the time I don't even use a timing light anymore) and tuning carbs (and dizzy adv. weights) is basically plug reading, how the motors sounds and reacts to throttle and how she smells.
If I got smoke coming out the tail pipes when I hit the throttle, I try to go leaner. If I start pinging I make sure I'm not to crazy on the timing and maybe fatten the jets a little. How's that for some high tech tuning.

you better go back to school. "I resemble that remark" ...Groucho Marx.
Curley would have said "If at first you don't succeed, keep on sucking until you do..." I think he was talking about tuning carbs.
